Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

Kinda fustrating they don't celebrate their 25th Anniversary on the air. Remember in 1996 when they aired a whole week of Old Power 106 music with the sweepers?
Just imagine its... Locked away somewhere in their vault collecting dust...

oh yea... LA's Hottest Music.. Best SLOGAN ever..

Ive made the Power switch! ;D In 1994 and 1995 on memorial day they brought back all the old music and all the old drops..i have it all on tape.

Would kill to hear that. You should put it on Mediafire for people to enjoy and remember!!! ;D

I remember their 10 Anniversary in January 1996. They were going up against 92.3 The Beat at that time over who plays the most Hip Hop & R&B.

I take back there still Hip Hop & R&B in their own way there just appealing to the new generation Hip Hop Crowd. I like Aston Martin Music by Rick Ross, they should stop playing these Rhythmic Pop songs like Break Your Heart by Taio Cruz & We No Speak Americano by Yolanda Be Cool and play more a great deal of the Back in the Day Joints along with a few currents. Live up to their " Where Hip Hop Lives slogan like they did in 1997 & most of the early 2000's when they became urban contemporary. Remember their playlist in the late 90's? Remember when used to play Mya & Sisqo's song It's All About Me, Romeo & Juliet By Sylk-E Fyne, etc. I know that Hip Hop & R&B aren't dominating the Rhythmic Top 40 like it was in the 90's and early 2000's but Power 106 can spin those recurrents everyonce in a while.

I'm 29 so I'm about to leave KPWR's demo in a few years, but I grew up listening primarily to Power with a little KROQ and KIIS thrown in. I disagree that they need to play more recurrents. They are a rhythmic top 40 station and they best serve their audience by playing what is new and now.

I have fond memories of 90s music, especially late 90s hip hop and r&b, but I also enjoy many artists today like Drake, Wiz Khalifa, the new Eminem CD, etc.

There is definitely room for classic hip hop on LA radio, in the form of stations like KDAY, which I find myself listening to more and more, but I think KPWR is best to stick with staying current. With a station like Power that is current hits, you should probably change the station rather than the station change, if you don't like the artists they are playing. It just means we are getting older :(

Times have changed and all their doing is trying to stay in business. Hip hop is not as popular as it was back in the 90's and early 2000.

"Whoomp There it is" and "Hip Hop Hooray" or "It Was a Good Day" came out eons ago..those were the days! Rap music has mostly faded into a memory. And the "Gangsta" rap lyrics.....so out of style now. Music has changed for the better lately with artists like Bruno Mars, Maroon 5 and Katy Perry, thank goodness!

Sounds like the pop scene has made a wonderful comeback lately and 105.9 is taking advantage of it. Reminds me of the pop movement of 1998-99.

That was one of best postings I've ever read on this site. I could not agree more! So glad to hear that Power 106 is, at long last, at least somewhat listenable once again.

I became too accustom too the urban contemporary sound. I was listening to a Ja Rule record from back in 2001,2002 called down a** b***h featuring charli batimore, I remember when Power used to that record all the time. That's why I miss artist like that. Lil Wayne is not real hip hop, Drake is ok sometimes but they should play that Ja Rule record mentioned above. I know power 106 was too much of a ghetto station when it went against "The Beat" but those times were the best of times for me. Hip Hop is all the same now a days too much autotune SMH.

Power 106 was just playing Hot In Here by Nelly a throwback from 2002 is it just me or are playing more back in the day joints?

Power 106 will always be Hip Hop & R&B their core is just changing. Remember that song called My Neck, My Back by Khia from 2002. That song used to get on nerve when it first came out. Everytime I turned on Power 106 there they go playing Khia. The stuff that they play now makes Khia's song sound good. Compare April 2002 when the record first came to radio and 2011. I'm still playing My Neck My Back by Khia till this day.

Power 106 is getting on my nerve with that Kush record by dr. dre.

It's the first major track from a member of the West Coast hip-hop establishment in awhile, so you will run it into the ground. Most of their "power songs" are usually spun at 80x weekly.
