Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

I just remeber LA's Hottest Music when they first started. Then Where Hip Hop Lives what year did they used that slogan?

I remember the "Where Hip Hop Lives" positioner around the late 90s- probably 1998 and 1999, if memory serves. That was a very common imaging phrase at that time- as I moved to the Midwest at that time and remember other rhythmic and Urban stations adopting the same phrase.
More like Where Hip Hop Dies.

Hot 104.1 in St Louis and Power 102.9 in New Orleans used the slogan where Hip Hop Lives when they first launched not anymore. I wonder if Hot 97 in New York used that slogan.

Hot 97 did use Where Hip Hop Lives when it flipped to Hip Hop & R&B in '94.

Hot 97 is way more focused than it's sister station Power 106. I understand that is now CHR/Rhythmic now and trying to go against Amp Radio because KIIS FM gone Mainstream Pop all of a sudden. No sense of sounding like KIIS now. Power 106 sounded very urban in April 1998 almost 13 years ago when 92.3 The Beat was appealing to the 18-24 crowd. Power 106 is ok for when I'm in a party mood. The only stations I listen is KJLH and KDAY. I'm only 17 years and I have an old soul. KDAY is playing the 90's and early 2000's Hip Hop & R&B hits that Power 106 used to play. When was the last time you've heard Swing My Way by K.P. & Envyi on Power 106 April 1998?

Hot 97 is one of the Top Rythnmic stations in american. The same with Power 106 becasue they bill well. Hot 97 is more Urban because of the demos. More African Americans in NYC than LA. Hot 97 also appeals to latinos too. NYC has enough stations to cater to other listeners. Z100, 92.3 Now and WPJL 95.5 (although its Adult Top 40) are Pop and WKTU which was (Rythnmic AC) for years but it's now Rythnmic CHR but you still hear gold recurrents and a few party tunes. LA use to be the same with Power vs The Beat. KIIS never really had strong competition until 2008 with AMP. KDL was Dance and B100 didnt do anything rating wise before I left LA for KC in 97

I'm afraid you're alone in this. Current hits radio is about adapting to the times, and most 17 year olds don't want to still be hearing KP & Envyi on the radio. It was barely a hit in 1998 as it was, when I was 17. I think what you're looking for is a Pandora station or an iPod playlist.

I've heard V-103 in Atlanta spin that song by KP & Envy "Swing My My" more than once in recent months. V-103 is one of the few urban stations that still will spin throwbacks and old school in the rotation of current hits. However, the base of their target audience is 18-49, but hone in on 25-34 year olds with the majority of their song rotation of hip-hop, R&B, and crossover hits from mid-80s through present day.

I do have K.P. & Envyi's Swing My Way on my iPhone on heavy rotation. I do understand Power 106 not playing it now. Power 106 has been known for adapting to new trends of course.

I remeber the song but where I lived it got airplay at nite. The group wasnt even sucessful. Just another one hit wonder. That song is out of date and alot of Power current listeners wont even recongize it. I asked a girl I work with if she heard of Soul Train had no idea what I was talking about. It was sad funny but sad.

KDAY will play it every now and again. Up until now I ain't heard it in a mad minute though.

I heard it on KDAY last year its been a while

@WDB2003 I read another article in a March 7, 1998 issue of a billboard magazine. K.P. & Envyi got mad airplay on Power 106 that week. 92.3 The Beat gave it mad airplay.

The Beat and Power 106 were the 2 of the countrys top hip hop stations during the 90's. It was a hit but the group never had another song. I remeber seeing the video for the song on BET a few years back but where I lived in 98 KPRS played the song at night. So it hardly got any appeal in KC unless you had a CD and played it out.

I remember KP and Envi and have the song on my ipod. It's a cool unique song from back then, great rhythmic flow from the ladies. It's a song that I seem to remember hearing up the i-5 on stations in Bakersfield/San Jose/Merced or even on the drive to Las Vegas. It's one of those "great road trip tunes" lol. But yeah...wasn't a huge hit by any means.

I have it on my iPhone. It sounds better if you haven't heard it in awhile. Bring back the real sound of Hip Hop. Get rid of the Where Hip Hop Lives slogan, Blow up the station and start over do something.

Hits and Hip Hop sounds fine to me but that slogan Where Hip Hop Lives is over. I was listening Friday night around 1am mostly Hip Hop but electric Hip Hop. Sounds okay if your in the party mood.

Yeah the Hits & Hip Hop is sounding better all ready. Where Hip Hop Lives my foot. Like Nas said hip hop is dead.

@WDB 2003 I'm starting to like We No Speak Americano by Yonlanda Be Cool & D-Cup for some strange reason. I often listen to it to unwind now. I know I said I couldn't stand it when it first came out was because I couldn't understand why it was on the radio in the first place. I'm starting to get used to the new power sound. Happy 25th Birthday Power 106 LA's Party Station thanks for 25 years of good music. I love Aston Martin Music too. Keep it Up Power 106. Oh remember when embracing Reggaeton/Latin Urban music because of Latino 96.3's debut?

Power 106 will still play Only You By 112 from 1996. Love that song and it's remix. Power 106 will still play recurrents every now and then.

Yeah I remeber the whole Reggaeton thing. Lots of stations in Colorado, Arizonia, Texas , Flordia and New York flipped to the format but now their gone most of them are spanish pop hits now. I have to give KXOL credit they are still hanging in there. I havent listen in a while
