Power 96.1 - Atlanta's New Hit Music Station

Listened to WILD earlier about 30 minutes and I heard a ton of throwback urban songs mixed with current Rhythmic hits. "Hits and Hip-Hop" is what someone said they were using. Could this format stay? "Hit's and Hip-Hop" can easily be an Urban format, but idk if Clear Channel with go this route. Playing older Urban hits can target V103, KISS and even MAJIC. Interesting if Clear Channel wants to eat a slice of Urban pie.

Currently listening to POWER 96.1 at work and the music is so upbeat!!!!!!!
The ATL urban market has to be so attractive...but can CC really get their hands on a piece of it (and the ad buys) with CBS, Cox, and Radio One already taking up so much room in the house?

Agree with all of y'all about Power's processing...they sound great! Better than Q.

Oh, this is going to hurt WILD.

And, on a side note, unless something happens on 105.3 or 94.9 over the weekend, we go yet ANOTHER weekend without Classic Hits (barring 97.1 the River) in Atlanta.

I still say its a work. Why start a new Top 40 on one ofd the best signals in town while keeping a variant of it on a weaker spot on the dial. Wouldn't it be better to try and drag as many of those listeners over to the new station while programming another niche say one that fills a young male demo that supposedly had a pretty good following but maybe to near for that big of a stick?

If you were keeping WILD as a Rhythmic I would think you would want to keep Mami Chula there instead of bring her over to power.

I smell a rat.

Well, according to Clear Channel, Mami Chula is staying on Wild. One thing that's interesting is that Wild is promoting Power on the air. From what CC is telling me, and I'm an advertising client, they plan to keep both stations. And the announcement about Rick Vaughn, the new PD, seems to indicate that's the plan. But as said earlier, I don't think that's a good idea and don't think it will work long-term.

One other thing--also said before--Power is never going to beat the Bert Show with Elvis Duran. I have to believe they'll hire a morning show.
Maybe CC wants to see how they will both do in the September book before making any other moves? Of course, you can find this out sooner than that with PPM.

I think WILD will eventually phase out the pop songs in favor of Hip-Hop.

"Hit's and Hip-Hop"

Shawty I love ya, but do we really?????

LOL, no we don't! CC waited to long to jump on the Urban bus. Don't forget STREETZ 94.5 is on too. They have a ton of ads, but there music playlist is now 80% Hip-Hop 20% R&B.

Who will handle afternoons and nights at POWER 96.1? I'd assume the new PD does afternoons.

I am not sure if I care for the CC branded "faster running" music. It sounds weird especially when you are used to hearing it at normal speed. I know they do this to make the station sound more upbeat. Overall, I am happy we have a true mainstream CHR even though the turntable is turned up to 45 and a half RPMs. Sounds great in HD. I know I am a countdown buff but maybe with CC as owners, we will get CHR versions of AT40 and Rick Dee's on the weekends.

105.7 is now playing stright rap music. Don't understand. And to be honest, why are most of the personalities white, when they are playing mainly Black rap/hip hop music?

I don't hear all Hip-Hop ???

It's just like CC does in NYC with Z and KTU. KTU in my opinion overlaps with Z too much. Make Wild a Dance Station. Make 105.3 alternative

NYC can support that, even with Atlanta's status in the hip hop world, it cannot and will not..............T

I just hope that it is not Power that gets the boot for the ratings failure, instead of WiLD.

I was concerned that WiLD would be cannabalizing its own station, though it looks like WiLD will be more 1990-2012 hip hop/rap, I don't really mind.

We have learned though, just how useless WGST is right about now.

Difference is, Z100 is successful enough to have a sister station with a lot of overlap. Power is a new station and doesn't need to share listeners with a station like WiLD.

Now that we have Power 96, I really don't think we need Wild - in a market with two huge Urbans (and two huge Urban ACs), I don't think there's room to support a straight Rhythmic station

That is, unless Clear Channel plans to take Power 96 into a straight-on battle with Q100, and add in 4-5 Hot AC-leaning tracks a month from now, like they're doing with Z100 in NYC - then, that might explain why they're still hanging on to Wild

Power is playing a rotation of maybe 75 songs...........WTF?????

Maybe 75 songs? What part about being a Top 40 station don't you understand?
I was wondering how many actual song they will play in their 9600 song block figuring between 75 -100 but already 75 in the first 24 hours interesting.

It might be no more than 50........

Huh? "Black rap", really? I don't think rap has a color...

I don't know why this atlanta market felt they needed another CHR. Couldn't they have just tweaked 105.7? Power 96 is just another version of the already corporate garbage. Good CHR radio I thought, is way up in Green Bay, WI. Locally owned companies/DJs comprising their own music mix that sounds better.
