Power 96.1 - Atlanta's New Hit Music Station

All I want to say is Power 96.1 is exactly what Atlanta needs. Everyone knows Q100 is a complete joke and Star94 is not and never has been a true CHR station... so not really sure why some people are saying ATL has enough pop stations?? Wild at 105.7/96.7 should be flipped though... Power should take it's place in the market.

And do any of you really think active rock listeners are going to be EXCITED about 96.1 flipping to Top 40? Obviously not (the comments on the Facebook page make sense - these aren't people who want to listen to top 40), but let's face it... Project wasn't anything special and wasn't pulling big numbers compared to Wild. NASCAR redneck rock music doesn't deserve to be on a such a powerful signal - sorry. Wild proved the format could be more successful in Atlanta. These trailer park folks will just have to get over it.

It's normal for people to fill a facebook page with negative comments whenever a format flips. That does not indicate anything other than the fact that a few listeners are unhappy. Keep in mind that even with Power and Q100, that's still only one & a half (or some would generously say two chr stations....). They're both conservative, but Power is just less conservative and more full service. There'll still be a large gap between V103 and both CHR's without WiLD but I'm very positive that Power will eventually shift (and perhaps Q100 may as well if forced to).

It would've been nice if CBS ran a rhythmic and ClearChannel ran Power instead of two ClearChannel CHR's sounding similar. Perhaps, it could work... but who knows. Maybe WiLD's ratings will fall as Power rises then WiLD will rebound many months later down the road. All this will surely take a stab at Q while Star should remain mostly ok.

this is about as bigoted and stereotypical of those who say only ghetto black folks listen to V103/Kiss 104 and all urban radio is "thug".

If you actually READ some of the comments on the 96.1 FB page from dissatisfied Project listeners (and it got up into the hundreds, hardly a few), you would have noticed that many were hardly "trailer park folks". I was surprised at the number of younger (20-35y/o) BLACK females that were posting they would have to find THEIR music somewhere else. Yes, they weren't dozens of them, but didn't fail to notice there were more than a few, and most appeared very upscale, attractive (read= they had all their teeth and didn't appear to live in trailer parks in Cherokee county).

So please don't assert that only the stereotypical white trash high school dropouts listen to active rock. It's as ignorant and ill informed as stating only ghetto black folks listen to hip-hop or urban.

I personally won't miss Project 9-6-1 (though the Alternative Project, aka a 99X clone, is still alive and well FOR NOW on 96.1HD2), but I don't think more of the same or one-off formats are good for this market, anymore than needing ANOTHER news station on FM.

Less choice means more listeners give up on RADIO altogether. This will only burn the industry and these corporate owners in the long run. Once people leave, they are NOT coming back.

I see very little differentiation in the playlist between Q100 and Power. The only difference, really, is Power is even more tightly playlisted than Q (likely owing to the fact Power just launched).

To call Power "more full service" is a little silly when their morning show is from New York and their midday shift cconsists of voice tracks from a fruit cake in L.A. Seacrest's syndicated show (if one wants to call it that) fared poorly on Star several years ago.

Keeping Wild around as an Urban flanker makes little sense to me. The CHUrban sound didn't work so well for the station the first it was tried. Now, it has a blowtorch signal within the same cluster aiming for a similar audience meaning the pickings will be even slimmer.

Wild's programming should've been kept intact largely as-is and moved to the 96.1 signal with the Wild branding. Project should've been relocated to 105.7 / 96.7 or 105.3. It's obvious Project is not coming back, CC is not going to have three separate stations targetting young adult demos within the same cluster. WHAT A SHAME that the least listened to rock station in the market on a full power signal (Rock 100.5) outlasted both Dave FM and Project 9-6-1. The frightening thing is, Cumulus will probably sit around and do nothing to improve Rock 100.5. They probably figure they will get listeners by default.

Just because Ryan Seacrest flopped on Star94 doesn't mean he will on Power... completely different demographic... and please, Q100 has been the only CHR in the market for awhile now and to call it a true CHR is laughable. Most markets the size of Atlanta have at least 2 CHR stations so I don't understand what the big deal is??

Metal/active rock is way passed its prime and doesn't deserve to be on such a strong signal anymore. I agree though that they need to ditch Wild and move some of the rhythmic stuff over to Power... there is no need for 2 more... but there is a need for another CHR on a full power signal to compete with Q100.

You better check your metro area income maps a like more closely sparky. We have trailer parks like every other metro county, but don't associate all the unwashed, toothless, low income folks with living here.

Really?!?! Is it? I would think both stations cater more to women. Star might skew a little older, but I would think the demographics are relatively similar.

But in my opinion, this has relatively little to do with demographics. The reality is that I can't think of a single syndicated radio show that's done well in Atlanta, except Tom Joyner.

I don't care what music they play, Power probably won't be around long if they are relying on Elvis Duran and Ryan Seacrest to carry them through the prime hours against local talent.

Steve Harvey and Rickey Smiley are syndicated shows that do well in Atlanta. CMT Live with Cody Alan seems to be doing okay. I wholeheartedly agree with everything else you said.

Isn't Steve Harvey show from Atlanta? I know he lives here and Family Feud is taped here. So while his show is syndicated, I would actually consider him to be a local talent.

I was referring specifically to the music. They are more of a full service top 40 playlist and exclude less songs from the top 40 charts than Q100 does at the moment.

Steve Harvey has been doing his show from his home studio here in Atlanta. Rickey Smiley does his show from Radio One's studios downtown. But both shows are targeted to a national audience and not specifically Atlanta.

Wishful thinking. I know those whom are in management in CBS Radio here, and they won't touch rhythmic at all. V-103 has the music programming freedom to bounce around from core urban to some pop songs, and as long as the station is a major moneymaker then they will continue to allow this. Think WPGC 95.5 Washington, but with a predominate heavier urban lean and that is V-103.

So where does Kidd Chris land in all of this? Looks like the music stopped and he's the one without a chair.

Something tells me they are doing a promotional stunt with Project - pretending it's gone and getting fans really pissed and in a week or so Project will magically re-appear on a smaller frequency and CC will make a big deal about how they listened to the audience, blah, blah, blah.

EDIT: Well never mind that. Apparently 99X is switching to active rock at 6pm, per Rodney Ho.
