Power 96.1 - Atlanta's New Hit Music Station

Something tells me they are doing a promotional stunt with Project - pretending it's gone and getting fans really pissed and in a week or so Project will magically re-appear on a smaller frequency and CC will make a big deal about how they listened to the audience, blah, blah, blah.

EDIT: Well never mind that. Apparently 99X is switching to active rock at 6pm, per Rodney Ho.

Well, in 2000, they made a big deal about 107.5 the Buzz Houston going off the air. I think, a few days before the change, they announced they were just moving the station to 94.5

However, 12 years have gone by since then, and not only is it a different market, and a different ratings system, MP3s, Smartphones, Internet Radio, and Satellite are on the scene. If Project DOES come back, unless word of mouth spreads like wildfire and people like the station, it will NEVER regain it's listener base it had in August 2012.

I think it's funny how people on this board are calling Power 96 a "Real CHR" (as opposed to Q100), when Power 96 is playing even FEWER tracks out of the Mediabase CHR Top 40 chart than Q100 is

I'm really hoping this will change in the next couple weeks...

The imaging on 96.1 is excellent. One of the better IMAGING choices ClearChannelAtlanta has made. Of course, nothing can be as bad as Kick's VOs.

One song i really like, is "Too Close" by Alex Care. Wide spectrum of formats could play that song....

I'm glad someone else finally noticed that. Power's playlist in its infancy has been extremely safe. It will be interesting to see how the station evolves, but I really do not see anything (yet) that would prompt anyone to switch from Q100.

Anyone know when The Bert Show's current contract is due to expire?

I have to say that Power 96 is pretty good for a CHR.

Watch Rock100.5 get a 3 share in the September book. River will get a little bump, too. Both of them are sounding a lot better, with the added active rock on the former (without making CC's mistake with the 96 Rock->Project flip and getting rid of ALL the classic/heritage rock), and the added alt on the latter.

The September book will be very interesting, to say the least.

The Bert Show isn't under contract with Q100 anymore as of earlier this year if I'm not mistaken. The show now operates under some kind of syndication deal.

The imaging is way more exciting than Q100, but do you really like listening to the same 15 songs over and over again all day?

The main complaint against Q100 was that it was too conservative - and it looks like Power 96 is shaping up to be even more conservative than Q

Agreed! The imaging for Power 96.1 is great but their 20-song playlist is ridiculous!

Power 96 more conservative than Q.... WiLD 105.7 / 96.7 being URBAN ..... Star 94 & B98.5 + Q100 = too many chr's in Atlanta....

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS EVERYONE COMING UP WITH THIS STUFF?

Power 96 is obviously more chr-like than Q100 (and seems to be going more and more towards full top 40 as time goes on), WiLD 105.7 / 96.7 is going chr rhythmic (although not POP leaning rhythmic) and Star, B, and Q combined would be a top 40 friendly AC.

It's obvious that Power 96 will be Atlanta's new hit music leader along with WiLD on the other end of the chr spectrum. And unless Q shifts to compete, Power will also be the one pumping more new hits than Q. I'm shocked with some of the things already pumping over the Atl. airwaves through Power right now!

Lastly, Power 96 definitely isn't more conservative than Q, and I could've even still said this two days ago when they were slightly more conservative than they were yesterday. There are quite a few modern hits currently on Power that Q100 would never touch.

KDM find me one song on the CHR charts that power plays and that Q does not. Seriously?? Let me breakdown what I mean when I say conservative and I will add another word, liberal, to the mix and no, we are not talking politics. I see Q as liberal because not only does it play the top 4040rock songs but it also plays some of the top 40 songs from 3the or so years back. While power has awesome imaging, I see power as conservative because they are sticking strickly to the top 40 charts whick explains why they must play starships every damn 90 minutes. Your right, power will do better than Q because atlanta is not adventorous with their taste and tend do be strickly top hits.

Ill read your response in the morning. I have a headache and im cranky. Sorry if I came off like an ass but just been a bad week for rock radio in atlanta. I actually feel BRENTS pain. So depressed. **Jumps off cliff*

Didn't sound like an ass at all. Just sounded informative. I'm not one to always assume negative voice tone through text. I'm just mad that I did type something previously but I somehow knocked myself out of my browser and lost everything I wrote along with all the tabs I had open!

But here's what I wrote:

Some songs Power are playing that Q aren't:

* Can't stop me now - Afrojack ft Shermanology
* Too close - Alex Clare
* Saxobeat - Alexandra Stan

And I swear I even saw "Tongue Tied" by GroupLove played on Power as well. Didn't expect to see that, although it does have the "Atlanta Chr" type sound.

I know I'm missing others, but can't remember what they are, and those tracks have all been washed out of the faulty & buggy yes dot com site. Maybe they'll play again. Also, just wait until the recurrents and past hits are settled into the Power playlist, which I'm sure wont include Smashing Pumkins or Stereo Mc's.

It would be great if Atl could be a full service market including everything from rock to oldies to chr to AC to urban, etc. I guess the most recent best times for ATL. were in early to mid 00's or so. Now it seems that one thing has to be knocked down for something else to be fixed. People in Phoenix were also upset when KEXX dropped alternative to go Hot AC, and doing that here is almost equivalent to if Atlanta were to drop a rock format to go urban! We have as many chr's (from adult to younger leaning) as Atlanta has urbans. I guess multiple similar formatting is the way to go in many markets these days. Hopefully 100.5 will do something to make up for the losses... but either way, seems like either Oldies or Alternative Rock will end up being left out. But then again, who knows - we're still at the point where anything could happen. It's more of a time for hope and excitement, not for assuming the worst... despite the fact that a lot of NEWS and SPORTS talk is popping up on these boards that kind of take the hope away. After all, radio enthusiasts are always desperate for action in their market to speculate and discuss. Well, now the action is here, and other cities could only dream of having all this happening at once in their market. Lots to think and talk about.

with the added active rock on the former (without making CC's mistake with the 96 Rock->Project flip and getting rid of ALL the classic/heritage rock)

Not sure why you feel that was a "mistake." 96Rock was getting terrible ratings at the end. Meanwhile, Rock 100.5 has never done well by being 96Rock version 2.0.

Why did Project flip? I think it was a combination of higher upside going the CHR route (which might only be realized if Power installs a solid local morning show), negative outlook for the Active Rock format as a whole, the poor performance of Project in the money demo (18-34 #'s were OK but 25-54 #'s were atrocious), and possibly -- fear surrounding 92.9's flip to Sports. All Sports radio generally over-indexes with Men 25-54 from a ratings standpoint, has strong power ratios, and targets the same pool of advertisers as rock radio.

New CHR stations typically start with a really tight playlist to attract listeners quickly with really familiar stuff. After they get some ratings, they expand their playlist.

To elaborate on what KDM is saying is...Q100 does NOT play:

Chris Brown - Don't Wake Me Up
Alex Clare - Too Close
Afrojack - Take Over Control
Grouplove - Tongue Tied
Alexandra Stan - Mr Saxobeat
Outasight - Now Or Never
Afrojack - Can't Stop Me Now
fun - Some Nights

**POWER DOES**

ALSO, POWER does NOT cram boring, tired AC/HOT-AC down our throats!

The Script - Breakeven
Jason Mraz - I'm Your's
Matchbox 20 - She's So Mean
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
The Script - For The First Time
Coldplay - Paradise
Phillip Phillips - Home

....true CHR's should NOT STILL be playing these type of AC/HOT AC's as much as Q100 does!

Thank you POWER for being a true CHR....FINALLY! Just don't ---- it up, CC!!

(sorry for the all bold) :))

Because Rock100.5 would have not likely taken to the air to begin with and split the format--and the share--had 96 Rock just tweaked and added more active rock. Not saying that 96 Rock didn't need an adjustment, at all. Project dumping classic/heritage rock left a big hole for a competitor, which Cumulus then filled. IMO Rock100.5 won't make that same mistake, even if they add a lot more active rock. In fact, adding Bone as a flanker only strengthens Cumulus's hand. Cumulus won the last hand when they got CC to fold--and only holding, what, a 1.3 share?

I am about to lose all respect they are playing "Gol' Digga" by Kanye West. PLEASE Quit, and leave that music to WiLD.

Though I like the AC format, I think that the three songs I underlined, are great songs. Especially the top two. They, IMO could be played on AC formats with ease.
