Power 96.1 - Atlanta's New Hit Music Station

It's puzzling how "starships" made it to Hot AC in some markets. I guess a song titled "starships" could have a nice hot ac ring to it, but is the overall song itself really that great?

And "gold digger" is a typical chr recurrent (at least it seems like it is). At least they're not playing "Party up" by DMX all the time like our ClearChannel chr does in Phx (in addition to gold digger and other recurrent things).

Never even realized that Q wasn't playing "don't wake me up" by Chris Brown. wow.

.....find me one song on the CHR charts that power plays and that Q does not.

To elaborate on what KDM is saying is...Q100 does NOT play:

Chris Brown - Don't Wake Me Up
Alex Clare - Too Close
Afrojack - Take Over Control
Grouplove - Tongue Tied
Alexandra Stan - Mr Saxobeat
Outasight - Now Or Never
Afrojack - Can't Stop Me Now
fun - Some Nights

**POWER DOES**

ALSO, POWER does NOT cram boring, tired AC/HOT-AC down our throats!

The Script - Breakeven
Jason Mraz - I'm Your's
Matchbox 20 - She's So Mean
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
The Script - For The First Time
Coldplay - Paradise
Phillip Phillips - Home

....true CHR's should NOT STILL be playing these type of AC/HOT AC's as much as Q100 does!

Thank you POWER for being a true CHR....FINALLY! Just don't ---- it up, CC!!

I'm sure there will be more songs to come. Just dying to see how Q100 will react and what they'll do because they can't try to sound like Star and Power at the same time without "doing too much." Once Power becomes fully established and creates a huge impact with ratings, which way will Q go? It will probably bring all the chr's down into a 5 or 4 share (and I'm sure Power will eventually surpass Q - even WiLD showed they would've at least tied with Q if they were on a full signal!).

Interesting that you bring this up. Certainly, they could play all top 40 songs from 2005-2012. It wouldn't work. OutKast will alienate the 12-17 y/o's and Nikki Minajj will alienate the 30 somethings who likes the music Star plays.

I think they go against Power. B is already fighting a death match with Star (the latter is winning). A three-way-race is something Q does not need. A Power-Q race will not sit so well with the older-female audience Q shares with Star. Bert and his show also doesn't fit a full-on CHR. They would have to get new imaging, new DJs, and new music. I don't know if they are willing to do that. But, they better if they want good ratings and revenue.

Power 96 is obviously more chr-like than Q100 (and seems to be going more and more towards full top 40 as time goes on), WiLD 105.7 / 96.7 is going chr rhythmic (although not POP leaning rhythmic) and Star, B, and Q combined would be a top 40 friendly AC.

It's obvious that Power 96 will be Atlanta's new hit music leader along with WiLD on the other end of the chr spectrum. And unless Q shifts to compete, Power will also be the one pumping more new hits than Q. I'm shocked with some of the things already pumping over the Atl. airwaves through Power right now!

Lastly, Power 96 definitely isn't more conservative than Q, and I could've even still said this two days ago when they were slightly more conservative than they were yesterday. There are quite a few modern hits currently on Power that Q100 would never touch.

Okay, just to clear this up (using Mediabase)...

CURRENT CHR/TOP 40 SONGS THAT POWER IS PLAYING THAT Q100 IS NOT...
Don't Wake Me Up/Chris Brown
Finally Found You/Enrique Iglesias
Too Close/Alex Clare

CURRENT CHR/TOP 40 SONGS THAT Q100 IS PLAYING THAT POWER ISN'T...
Want U Back/Cher Lloyd
Matchbox Twenty/She's So Mean
Kelly Clarkson/Dark Side
Train/50 Ways To Say Goodbye
Justin Bieber/As Long As You Love Me
Karmin/Hello
Phillip Phillipps/Home

As of right now, Power is FAR MORE CONSERVATIVE than Q100

Really? Phillip Phillipps "Home" just hit #1 on the I-Tunes chart - Matchbox Twenty is #28 on ITunes - "Paradise" by Coldplay was a huge ITunes seller, as was Viva La Vida, For The First Time, and I'm Yours

And "Breakeven" by The Script was a huge Top 10 CHR hit

Obviously, people love these songs, even though you don't...but wait, your personal music taste doesn't represent the CHR demographic of Atlanta ::)

I too wonder why POWER doesn't play Cher Lloyd's "I want U Back" and some others.
But, name one Clear Channel CHR that STILL plays The Script's "Breakeven" like 15 to 20 times per week. And then, go into Matchbox 20. It's not about musical preference. It's the obvious differences in Q vs Power. :)

Naw, it's about musical preference - and there's nothing wrong with that - I think Clear Channel made a good move in offering people a choice for CHR - if you're in the mood for upbeat pop tune in to Power, and if you're someone that wants to hear music from a much wider variety of genres, tune in to Q100

My disappointment is that I was expecting Power to be the liberal CHR in ATL that wasn't afraid to take risks...and it looks like so far, they're the exact opposite - maybe they're just establishing themselves, and things will change in a couple weeks. But so far, repeating the same 20 songs over and over just isn't gonna cut it

But this is CHR, not Alternative. CHRs should NOT be playing gold titles as often as Q plays the gold titles you just mentioned.

Fair enough, but then Power 96.1 shouldn't be playing "OMG" by Usher, "Low" by FloRida, "Tik Tok" by Kesha, etc.

This isn't about playing gold titles - it's about Q100 playing songs that don't have a dance beat (which is why "Home" and "She's So Mean" were included in the list of "complaints")

Power is playing Justin Bieber - As Long As You Love Me and if you look at their entire playlist it is a lot more liberal than Q... also Power plays the remixes with rap (like Maroon 5 Payphone with Wiz Khalifa where as Q100 leaves it out) plus they play their songs with an increased tempo compared to Q100. Plus, Q100's imaging, DJ's etc all fit a Hot AC format more so than a CHR... I mean there is absolutely no energy with that station it just feels so dull and boring.

Power just flipped so you know they are going to be running a tighter playlist at first... once the DJ's get on next week I can them starting to loosen it up a bit. You can tell this station will blow Q100 out of the water once it gets up and going.

Could not have said it better myself, mike. Absolutely the point I was trying to make.  :)

You can tell this station will blow Q100 out of the water once it gets up and going.

A lot of people were saying Q100 was going to do the same thing to Star when Q first launched at 100.5 FM. Instead, Q struggled in the ratings (and revenue) for a few years. Even when The Bert Show caught fire, they weren't doing the greatest of jobs recycling those listeners into the other dayparts.

I will say this -- the launch of Power is a great thing for Star 94. Power is going to peel away a lot more listeners from Q than Star.

Six months from now, I envision the ratings (6+ AQH share) shaping up something like this:
--Star 94: 4.8 share
--Q100: 4.0 share
--Power 96: 2.8 share
--Wild 105.7: 2.2 share

It helps B too, in the race for females.

I agree with your share estimates except for Wild. I think they'll be down to around 1.5. And of course if Power hired the right morning show, the race between Power and Q could be a different story.

The competing morning show, Bert, isn't even targeted to the same age people. The soccer mom will listen to Bert on Q, while the Georgia Tech college kid will listen to Elvis. Seacrest is a popular figure and turns in huge revenue with ads, contests, etc.

You're assuming that faster pace and less "Hot AC music" means higher ratings - let's see if that actually happens...

You do realize that there are lots of markets where Hot AC blows CHR out of the water - let's see if Atlanta's one of them

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D So far really loving it... And, I agree with most people about them possibly blowing Q out of the water.

Really like the playlist. And, I've noticed they are adding some older songs that should still be played. Not to mention, it's nice having a more upbeat radio station! Now if they would just playing Whistle by FloRida.. I'd be a happy camper. ::) ::) ::)

I think WiLD will have a 0.0 share because I have a feeling it won't be around in 6 months.
