Predictions for Hudson Valley and Albany Radio in 2008

yep, think a current or a classic dance format would do it here....somebody should step up to the plate....any takers?? Think cheap channels new owners will take it on?? Oldies up for grabs also...I'm not gonna beat the dead horse about the 55 and older demos not being a target for oldies; it would take somebody with a good pair to try it, everybody else is scared to.... ???

I doubt Clear Channel would do it because it would draw audience from Kiss 96.1 WPKF. The same goes for PAMAL with WSPK K104. That leaves Cumulus .They do go after the younger demographic with WRRV, but of course the audience is different with a rock format. WPDH is their golden goose so that won't change. That leaves WCZX mix 97.7 and WKXP .Personally I would hope they wouldn't change WCZX ; also from a business standpoint ,since it does so poorly it would make more sense to flip WKXP . Perhaps they might, but dance does not do well in the ratings, so it would be a risky move.It seems it’s one thing to go dance to it at a club, another thing to listen to it on the radio. I would say they don't have much to loose but then I would come dangerously close to sounding like Disney.
So long as they don't call it B94!!

Let's put it this way....Clear Channel down here in NYC has WKTU. Two years ago they had tweaked their format which was a combination of rhythmic currents/AC to a rhythmic AC. The ratings have been consistent but they haven't gone down OR up, which leads me to believe while they do have their audience, they haven't been attracting anyone else to the station. And now with the launch of Pulse 87, most people don't even regard 'KTU as anything.

Point is, if Clear Channel attempts to do such a format (and the people that were considering owning them have BACKED OUT!)...it's going to TANK.

This time around, a current rhythmic leaning station in the Hudson Valley (and even though I was leaning the conversation towards Albany, I can talk Kingston/Poughkeepsie/Newburgh....I went to Marist and lived up there. ) would have to have more than just 6 songs and other material that is OBSCURE....so yeah, definitely NOT a "B-94" LOL.

I was thinking more along the lines of that for the Hudson Valley. And maybe something a tad edgier in Albany.

WBZZ 105.7 goes "True Oldies" destroying WTRY and seriously damaging WKLI. WZMR becomes a simulcast of WROW 590....

I remember back in 1995 when WBPM (B-94) was a current rhythmic station. I also remember how they library was rather restricted (Captain Hollywood Project, Marina) and wished they could have done a lot more with it. I guess licensing held the station back at that time. Also at that time I remember that K-104 was pretty dance friendly for a CHR.

Yet, it would be something if the region would revisit a current dance format....though I would think such a format would greatly benefit Albany and that region. You would get the city crowd, the suburban areas (Colonie, Latham, Watervliet, Delmar) and possibly those to the north (Saratoga, Glens Falls). And that's about it. I don't see many in Schoharie, Eastern Rensselaer, Greene or Columbia Counties flocking to it per se....but who knows.

I understand that Tony Santiago since you are on Allan's board or maybe some place else. I remember WBPM's B94 back in the good old days as top 40, but many people are saying they're not bringing the call letters back anytime soon, so it belongs on 92.9 and it will stick it forever. I missed WBPM at 94.3, hats off to 92.9 for doing poor ratings. And I do remember when it was "Rhythm 94.3" from 1999 until 2001 when it flipped to oldies. I loved "Rhythm 94.3" so much and I still missed it. They played a lot of "Jammin' Oldies" with a lot of Motown in it. They usually played Donna Summer, the Commodores, Al Green, the Temptations and lots of others. I love his morning show with CJ along with Russ Hanson and Downtown Lou Brown in PM drive. It was fun to listened to. I still do missed that station.

I know that they were news talking about Clear Channel Hudson Valley is selling off their stations to different owners, think of Regent, Pamal, Citadel, CBS Radio and other radio owners. They will take over. Maybe WPKF will still be rhythmic CHR on 96.1, but it almost covered on 95.9 when it is still playing the oldies on WVOS-FM. I wish they should put in a "greatest hits" format like they do with CBS-FM since July of 2007 when it came back from that awful "Jack" mess, but it does well. And as for "Classic Hits 92.9", it does not. It plays too much classic rock, to much polarizing heavy 80's songs and album cuts on the station along with this horrible mess of playing late 70's, 80's and some early 90's thrown' in on Saturday nights where Randy Turner (or Randy Turnip as warm590 would say) hosted the "Music Blimp". This station sucks, but it hurts WPDH, WDST and other rock stations. I guess it needs to refocus the station or maybe put a Motown show with Mary Wilson. That should do a lot better than CBS-FM.

Motown rules! We need a station in the Hudson Valley/Poughkeepsie listening area, because the "greatest hits" format needs to have all demographics maybe mostly 50+ year olds, just like CBS-FM.

As I said it again, "B94" is in Pittsburgh at 93.7 as WBZW, but it's not coming back to the Hudson Valley, because it hasn't been on that station for almost 10 years until 1999 until it was sold to Roberts Radio and it became "Rhythm 94.3".

If Pamal should take over Cumulus, WKXP will flip for a WXPK simulcast of AAA's "The Peak" from 107.1 in Bliarcliff Manor. This station will go after WDST and WBPM. This should work since Pamal took over CC since last February.

Will see what happens after the holiday when I start making a thread about my predictions for 2009. I've been doing radio predictions every year in NYC and the Hudson Valley and Albany. We'll have to wait for 2009 to think about it!
