President-Elect Trump appoints Brendan Carr as FCC Chairman.

That reminds me of a comment that has been previously posted on these forums.

Want to know what the future of FM radio sounds like? Just listen to what AM radio has become.

Want to know what the future of AM radio sounds like? Just listen to private U.S. shortwave stations.

I think we’re going to see more odious and noxious content, which will drive more people away from traditional radio. Race to the bottom.
On vacation, I scrolled through the channels I found Real Time with Bill Maher on CNN on Saturday night. It made me glad I no longer had access to CNN, even though I am on the left.

The new administration vows to fight "regulatory lawfare," while at the same time Carr promises to use FCC regulations to target things it doesn't like.

The Supreme Court and the new president talk about on removing "unelected bureaucrats." No one in the FCC is elected.
Much like making people healthy by letting disease and sickness run rampant, this is not a competent administration coming in. It’s agenda and grift driven.

Real Time with Bill Maher isn't on CNN though. Was he a guest on that Saturday night comedy news show CNN does now?

All that means is that white men will continue to own American media, as they have for 100 years
What can the FCC do to help minorities buy radio or TV stations? They are not a bank.
For 25 years, under both dems & reps, the FCC has been unable to improve minority ownership of media. So now nothing will change.
There has been a considerable increase in Hispanic ownership of stations, from Univision and SBS down to a number of smaller market operators who have been buying mostly secondary stations.

The biggest issue is that most people don't want to own a radio station today, irrespective of race or ethnicity.
As for hiring guidelines, it really doesn't matter since radio companies aren't really hiring a lot of people.
But the change in focus away from artificial quotas to hiring based on ability will be a benefit to the industry.

Look for content restrictions, any criticism of the Trump administration will at least get you in the hearing room. No pro-LGBTQ content, no info on how to get an abortion. We'll have a reverse fairness doctrine, to where broadcasters will have to air the views of quacks and conspiracy theorists.

Sinclair gets all the TV stations it ever wanted.
The only content restrictions on radio and TV involve obscenity and profanity. There are restrictions on political content under "equal time" rules, and there are restrictions on Lowest Unit Rate. There are no restrictions on talking about social issues.

Over the years they've tried a number of things, such as lessening the paperwork or encouraging companies to donate signals to minorities. The purpose is simply to diversify ownership.

Here's a link to the FCC report on minority ownership from 2021:

The FCC has had an interest in improving minority ownership going back to the 70s. Here's a report from 1978:

But the change in focus away from artificial quotas to hiring based on ability will be a benefit to the industry.

It really wasn't about quotas, but simply fairly posting openings publicly, so people outside the owner's personal spere were considered. Companies weren't forced to hire minorities, just consider them. Hirings have always been based on qualifications and ability.

Yet somehow, Carr has found ways to disqualify an American citizen from having a majority interest in a radio company because of his political party.

He testified about it to congress last month. He called it an issue of American security.

You act like this will be normal America after January 20.
More than half the voters think it will be better than today's "normal". Remember, we have (at least) a two party system in this country.

Uh huh. Wait til those mass deportations and tariffs hit, and Elon, who I don't remember being on my ballot as "co-President" takes a sledgehammer to the budget and MAGA doesn't get veterans and SSI checks, and well, we don't need no education.

That is because the investment firms he controls or manages have undisclosed foreign ownership. A great deal of the funding for those companies is apparently foreign and not attributable to specific nations or persons due to "street names".

I find any concern about the ownership of AM, FM and broadcast TV to be exaggerated because all are very much in decline. But most nations of the world have very severe limits of foreign ownership of broadcast stations; many prohibit it totally.

In the case of Soros, his manipulation of the British currency hurt the middle and working class in Great Britain beyond belief, and some just want to avoid any effort of his to succeed.

Actually it turns out that's not true. The foreign ownership was attributed to another firm, not his.

Uh huh. Wait til those mass deportations
Nearly every Hispanic I know (and that is pretty much my world) hopes all the undocumented "illegal" immigrants are rapidly deported.
and tariffs
Tariff "threats" are a negotiating ploy with China, which sells goods to the U.S. for well below cost to create dependency while eliminating American factories and production.
hit, and Elon, who I don't remember being on my ballot as "co-President"
All presidents have a staff of advisors. So?
takes a sledgehammer to the budget and MAGA doesn't get veterans and SSI checks, and well, we don't need no education.
I won't continue as this is no longer a broadcasting subject, but since it's being discussed openly and widely on radio and TV, I suppose it is hard to stay away from it.

Sidebar: I do believe education will improve. When I took my oldest daughter to register for school in California for the first time, they would not accept her because her birth certificate said "Puerto Rico" and she did not have a "green card", a requirement she verified with her supervisors, too. I ended up spending a significant part of my income on a private school because I could never put he in a systems that was so ignorant.

All of that was spelled out in the FCC application. It says all foreign ownership is less than 25%.
It is impossible to know the nationality of "street names". That is the whole issue behind public radio corporations requesting higher allowable percentages of foreign ownership. Those companies know that the era of computerized trading has made the bulk of transactions falling to street names as trading can happen so fast today and nobody had actual "stock certificates" in their name any more.

So if you think your company's publicly traded shares may have many foreign owners, you get the FCC to increase the limits of foreign ownership.
