Newsom is not eligible, presuming it is Harris at the top of the ticket. The Constitution states in the 12th Amendment that the President and VP cannot represent the same state. VP Harris currently represents California, and Gov. Newsom is obviously the sitting governor of California.

Theoretically one could establish legal residence somewhere other than California before the date that the electoral college meets in December, but that's unnecessary if they just nominate ... anyone else.
You're right but that does not keep the national press from camping outside the California State Capital though or the lead editor from calling their Sacramento bureau reporters to follow Newsom. Also I get the other picture VP Harris has to look for somebody in other parts of the country who does have a great record with getting endorsements from former Republicans like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger that also has to be considered here.
