steelers radio history...i think

the steelers were blessed (cursed??) with 3 guys who put in 30+ years as steeler voices; joe tucker (from 1936 thru 1967), jack fleming (1958-1993) and myron cope (1970-2004).

tucker appears to have done dual duty (tv-radio) at least from 1956-1959 and 1962-1967, except for 1964 as cbs required all of its crews to do one half of all games, so he was exclusively on the tv side. he did pxp for steelers away games on cbs tv and home games on steelers radio. steelers games were on nbc tv in 1960 and 1961, and as of now, i have no idea - if any - role he had on tv calls for those two years.

here then is a guesstimated history of the steelers on radio:
1936-1940: joe tucker (solo?)
1941-1947: joe tucker, bill cullen, woody wolf (41 is certain)
1948-1955: joe tucker, bob prince (tucker was solo while prince finished covering the pirates season).
1956-1957: joe tucker (home games only), red donley
1958-c.1961: joe tucker (home games only), red donley, jack fleming
c.1962-1963: joe tucker (home games only), tom bender, jack fleming
1964: tom bender, jack fleming
1965-1967: joe tucker (home games only), tom bender, jack fleming
1968-1969: tom bender, jack fleming
1970-1993: jack fleming, myron cope
1994-1999: bill hillgrove, myron cope
2000-2004: bill hillgrove, myron cope, tunch ilkin
2005: bill hillgrove, tunch ilkin

when the steelers played on the road in the 1955-1959 and 1962-1963, 1965-1967 eras, donley was on pxp, then bender was on pxp.

station wwsw was the longtime flagship (1936-c.1961). when the steelers went to kdka (c.1962), donley was dropped for bender. i'm not certain of the year that happened in the 60's.

wtae then became the radio flag of the steelers from 1970 thru 1999, then rocker wdve became the flag. i think fox970 (what was wwsw) is a part of the team, too.

more to come.

Bob Prince

Let me ask you this about Prince and the Steelers-

I have a late friend who played for the Steelers in 1947-48, Bob Cifers, who knew Prince well at that time.

Now, could they have gotten to know each other on the one year Prince broadcast football games and from whatever else Prince did in addition to Pirates games in 1947? Sure.

But I was just wondering if possibly Prince could have done the games in '47 (Steelers first playoff year) as well.

Cincinnati Bengals

Here's what I know/remember, and Cincinnatians please correct any errors ...
- Phil Samp was the play-by-play voice from 1968 to 1990. Not sure who the analysts were; I was still pretty young in Samp's later years.
- 1991-92: Ken Broo (PBP), Dave Lapham (A), Ken Anderson (A), WKRC
- 1993-95: Ken Broo (PBP), Dave Lapham (A), WKRC
- 1996: Paul Keels (PBP), Dave Lapham (A), WKRC
- 1997-99: Pete Arbogast (PBP), Dave Lapham (A), WBOB
- 2000-present: Brad Johansen (PBP), Dave Lapham (A), WOFX/WCKY-WSAI/WLW

it's possible. prince started as rosey rowswell's sidekick in the pirates booth in 1948. he may have had a head start with the steelers.

i know bill cullen was alongside tucker thru much of the 40's. yes, the same bill cullen who gained most of his fame as a tv game show m.c. and a longtime panelist on "i've got a secret."

Re: Cincinnati Bengals

schmave,

that's sweet.

i have dave lapham as being the analyst since 1986. according to proquest, dennis janson was the analyst for 1983 and 1984.

there was also a year where lapham missed five or so games in 1997 or thereabouts as he moonlighted as a fox analyst. i have it at home as to who took his spot in the analyst's chair. i'll post here when i find it, unless somebody beats me to it!

thanks again!

Geez, a lot better than I could come up with. Just a side, Craig Wolfley has been sideline reporter since the Steelers went to 'DVE. Other than that, GREAT research!

Green Bay Packers (many dates approximate)

1929 - First game. Announcer unknown but believed to be Russ Winnie who handled the games to 1948.
1949-58 Earl Gillespie
1959-68 Ted Moore
1969-75 Gary Bender/Jim Irwin
1975-78 Jim Irwin/Lionel Aldridge
1979-94 Jim Irwin/Max McGee
1995-1998 Irwin/McGee/Larry McCarren
1999-current - Wayne Larrivee/Larry McCarren
(All WTMJ, Milwaukee. Green Bay stations have never originated games although Gillesipe and Irwin both started their careers at Green Bay stations. And yes, that's the same Gary Bender who was with CBS for many years and still does some college football on cable.)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers announcers

There is minimal info about the history of Bucs radio online, and since I'm not old enough to remember this stuff, here is what I do know:

1976-78: Ray Scott
1979-1988: Jack Harris & Dick Crippen
1989-present: Gene Deckerhoff with color commentary from Jesse Ventura (late 80s-early 90s) and Scot Brantley (1996-present)

The Bucs used to air their games on WQYK and have been on WDAE since 2004.

Indianapolis Colts

Bob Lamey has done Colts Play By Play from 1984-1991 and again from 1995 till Present

Re: Tampa Bay Buccaneers announcers

Lots of holes in that, so let me see if I can clear it up, listing play by play announcers and [flagship stations]:

1976-77 Ray Scott [970 WFLA]
1978 Dick Crippen(1st half season); Jim Gallogly (2nd half season) [970 WFLA]
1979-87 Mark Champion [1250 WDAE, 620 WSUN, Q105]
1988-present Gene Deckerhoff [Q105, WQYK 99.5/1010; 620 WDAE/US 103.5]

Over the years, color analysts have included, in addition to Dick Crippen, Jack Harris, Dave Kocourek, and the aforementioned Jesse Ventura and [most recently] Scot Brantley

From 1976-78, local radio sportscaster Jim Gallogly and his business partner, a local Dodge dealer named Hubert Brooks, owned the Bucs broadcast rights. From 1979 until 2003, the stations that aired the games owned the rights. Since last year, the Bucs have owned the rights and packaged the games themselves.

The reason why Jim Gallogly replaced Dick Crippen in the middle of the 1978 season was because, generally speaking, Dick did a lousy job, and was criticized for it in the local press. Since Dick came from TV, that might have partially explained his inability. Nowadays, a lot of TV guys do radio play-by-play, don't paint enough of a picture in their play-by-play, and yet, keep their jobs.

Gene moonlights as play-by-play radio announcer for Florida State Univ. Seminoles football, while Scot doubles as radio color analyst for UF football.

Bengels announcer Brad Johanson comes from TV and seems to me to paint a pretty good picture of the play hes calling on radio. Ken Broo a former bengel PBP Guy also came from Cincy TV

Bender is also the cable TV voice of the Phoenix Suns, has been for many years. And, in regards to WTMJ, I've never seen or heard of a station with such a stranglehold of broadcast rights of every major sports team in its state--University of Wisconsin (Madison), Bucks, Brewers, and the Packers.

Didn't Ray Scott call Packer games in the '60s with Ted Moore?

> Bender is also the cable TV voice of the Phoenix Suns, has

IIRC, Bender was sports director at WKOW-TV Madison (and then-satellite WAOW-TV Wausau) during his years with the Packers.

He was doing Suns home (never road) games on TV and Bear games on radio at the same time for a few years. I think his Bears duty took precedence if they played on the same day. He must have frequent-flier miles still available to him after that gig. :-D

The Bonneville-owned stations in Phoenix (KTAR and KMVP) have our local teams' rights pretty well locked up as well. One or both carries the Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Suns, and ASU football & basketball. The only exception is KDUS with the Coyotes and ASU baseball.

Re: Green Bay Packers (many dates approximate)

>
> Didn't Ray Scott call Packer games in the '60s with Ted

yes he did, but only on the tv side for cbs. from 1956 thru 1963, then took off 1964 as he didn't like the cbs set up for 64 where he'd only call a half of a game while the opponent's tv voice called the other half. earl gillespie took his spot. he returned to do packer tv games for 1965, 1966 and 1967. he was solo in 1956, had johnny lujack as partner in 1957, george connor in 1958, then tony canadeo was his boothmate from 59-63, 65-67.

i think wtmj has been the flag for the packers sice the start in 1929. no other station in all of north america has been flagship for any team as long.

...the stranglehold hasn't always been that tight. The Brewers quit WTMJ for WISN in the early '80s, the Bucks quit WTMJ for WEMP in the mid-'70s, and I think WOLX Madison does its own Badgers football coverage. But WTMJ undoutedly knows how to construct and maintain a Statewide network better than any other outfit in Milwaukee...

...when I worked for WPKR in Oshkosh, the station owner actually put in a bid to take the Packers away from WTMJ. He then went around bragging about how he came in second in the bidding. (There were only two bids in total.) He was an embarrassment on other fronts, too ;-) ...

When Infinity killed off WMAQ to put WSCR on 670 before the start of the 2000 season, the Bears specifically had it in their contract that the games would move to WBBM because team officials refused to have the Bears associated with certain WSCR air people...<P ID="signature">______________
