Public Radio/TV Facts And Myths

And that's another thing.

There's more that just NPR and MPTV. There are clusters all over. Much of the programing that PBS did is now competing with baby, nick Discovery, TLC and other outlets. I've also seen them buy shows from Discovery and BBC and show them as well. Not to mention their revenue streams they get from DVD and other sales.

I'm also curious about the funding and the formations. PBS asked for more royalties from KCET in Los Angles. They said they could not afford it due to donations being down and wanted to work a deal. PBS refused.

As of January, they renounced their PBS funding and went Independent. They will do the same programing but will focus more on Local arts and area items.

I'd like to see KERA do something similar or maybe a .2 to facilitate such items. And what about Channel 2? They sold it because of costs and said they would carry the programing again once the HD was widespread. Well? Besides I miss Body Electric! LOL

But have you seen the direction DISC, TLC, HISTORY and A&E are taking now. Back int he day you could make a reasonable argument about the need for PBS with those channels available. Now we get such fare as Toddlers and Tiaras, Real Housewives, 19 Kids and Counting, I Didn't Know I was Pregnant, etc.

Complain about liberal bias in their news reporting all you want, you can't compare the dreck produced by the commercial channels with PBS' programming. The same can be said for NPR. Like it or not the public broadcasting system produces quality programs unmatched by the "free market" media. In my opinion that makes PBS/NPR worth some government funding.

You left out History Channel's most recent deeper plunge into the reality cesspool, "Only In America" hosted by Larry the Cable Guy. :D :D

I guess some think that if programming isn't extremely right it just must be extremely wrong. ::)

Hmmm, an interesting angle for NPR/PBS funding. I just love it when they're 80 choices on TV and nothing worth watching. Maybe that's why I tend to go for a classic TV show versus new. There was a day when Discovery, History Channel, etc. had exceptional programming. Now I'm waiting for Egg TV with a close-up of a few eggs in an incubator and we're watching to see which egg hatches first. Oh, the bookies will be giving good odds and the commentator offers such good commentary of the lineage of each egg. It will truly be television worh watching.

And the reason that culture doesn't work on cable is simple--the audience for culture doesn't like television in the first place and doesn't want to spend the extra money for cable or satellite. Unless there are operas on Blu-Ray, they aren't buying a new player and they aren't going to buy a new HD set unless there's no other choice. (They probably waited until the last minute and used the FCC voucher to get the digital converter for their present sets--oh, they probably think in one way or another that their PTV or public radio station has "dumbed down" over the years, meaning "we want nothing but opera and Bach and they're giving us 'Antiques Roadshow' and those two philistines who talk about cars in loud voices.") That's why Bravo went to metrosexual TV after NBC bought them, why A&E went to Dog the Bounty Hunter and the Discovery networks are much lower in their brows than they used to (although they were never nothing more than upper-middle brow at best). And that's why Ovation TV will continue to have problems attracting viewers, despite the best of intentions. And there's nothing you can do about it.

Pardon me while I adjust my monocle.....There. That's better.

PBS has never been primarily opera and Bach, and the KERA-FM abandoned the classical format 20 years ago. Those people you see schlepping their family treasures through Antiques Roadshow are public broadcasting's audience. There aren't a lot of snooty elites to be seen, are there? Having watched PBS for the last 40 years I can say the only programming degradation has been during their pledge drives. Daniel O'Donnell? Seriously? What the hell is up with that?

I was in a hotel in Ozark, AR back in Sept. Was surfing the tube and found ARTS!!

Had not seen it in over 20 yrs! Thought it dried up and blew away. Nothing but the arts. Snippits of opera and other videos ala MTV.

I first saw it on Arlington Telecable in the 80's. May have been on Comcast before the TWX realign.

Not on my Dish or anywhere else I've seen.

I'm still for scrambling local PBS and renting a box to watch. They could also add other PBS stations for the price. Also they have five other channels including PBS World and PBS Create! Could even lump in VOD from your cell phone as well for the subscription fees.

Retransmission I guess would also have to be addressed for cable and satellite as well. But they could do a PBS package their too. Subscribe to the package or not for $X. I already have a superstation package on Dish I use. Could be same thing as well.
