Pulse 87.7 FM/Channel 6: Should Z-100,WKTU,Hot 97 and Kiss FM worry?

Should Z-100,WKTU,Hot 97,Power 105.1 and Kiss FM worry about Pulse 87.7?

These stations are really bland. The people at Pulse say that they will have an ear to the streets. Any thoughts?

They should worry a little, but I doubt that a low power TV audio signal at 87.7, off the Citibank Tower in Queens is going to be much competition for high-powered stations transmitting from Empire.

I can get Z-100, 103.5, Hot 97 and Kiss FM solid at my job. I BARELY am able to pick up 87.7 on one radio, and that's if I play acrobatics with the antenna

Maybe it would bode well for 87.7 FM if they started broadcasting in HD! ;D

Jazz WBGO 88.3/Newark would have been a nice signal for this station.
Too bad it's a non-commercial station. :(

There are other frequencies with much better signals that 88.3 to put Pulse on.
Losing WBGO would be sad.
That being said I'm happy Pulse 87.7 is coming!
It will be nice to have something alternative to hear.

I would say that Z100 is, indeed, bland, but not as bland as the cookie-cutter CHR's across the country. But Z100 definitely plays it "safe" to a great extent as well.

The mistake people seem to make about 87.7 is that their audio is not really "TV audio" even though they are the audio portion of the Channel 6 VHF frequency. They have full FM modulation. However, the signal is obviously significantly weaker than Z100. Despite that, while I can't see them competing with any of the big boys, they might get enough of a following to shave a small portion of the audience from stations like Z100, Hot 97, KTU, etc. If they can generate a buzz on the streets, and get a loyal audience, even if it's small, then they will have succeeded in what they are trying to do and what their advertisers would likely be looking for.

get a carver Tx-11radio or any sangean Tuner with a casette adaptor / portable fm transmitter that will probably fix the signal problem lol

is the Pulse going to be alternative rock ???

is 87.7 a com or non com lets establish this, because non coms dont pay and star requires a salary! :)

Those stations need not worry: Arbitron will treat this station as a *TV* - not radio - station. It won't be listed with the NYC radio ratings.

I guess the only ones that have to be worried is WCBS/2 (or whoever the fifth-rated morning news show is in NYC - I think it's them) ... Hey, how embarrassing would that be to get beaten by a "TV" station that's actually a radio station?

hell I'd do it free of charge espicailly if Alt rock.. can anyone confirm that???
cost me more to get my radio Jobs then my paycheck in VT  the things we do when you love the radio ;)

Remember that in the eyes of the FCC, this is not a radio station. It's a Low Power TV Station. (there is a specific type of TV license named "Low Power", which is more or less independent of the technical concept of how much power the station is actually using)

There is no such thing as a non-commercial Low Power TV Station, in the FCC's eyes - all LPTVs can legally sell airtime.

That doesn't mean the station must try to sell time, and certainly doesn't guarantee it will succeed if it tries!

It's going to be Top-40/CHR/Hit Parade...whatever they call it this week. THey want to compete with Z-100.

Yup. Been there and doing that on occasion (fill-in weekend work). It's always better when they pay you, though. ;D

According to Arbitron, the station @ 87.7FM doesn't even show up in the ratings.

WHTZ-100, (Hot 97) WQHT and (Power 105) WWPR-FM may not see a slight loss in their listenership.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy

Why do you think it might be alternative rock?
It has been confirmed it will be CHR/Urban/dance

Again, IT WON'T *BE* IN THE BOOK. PER ARBITRON, IT'S NOT A RADIO STATION!!

I wonder if the lessees of 87.7 realize this. They're the same guys that are now currently doing the Radio VSE (written BCE in Cyrillic) Russian pop music programming
