PULSE 87 - NY DAILY NEWS COLUMN BY DAVID HINCKLEY- 9/17/2008

Quoting the article....

"This also could be a case of a new dance station creating a bigger pie, not just subdividing the old one. WKTU's ratings under PPM have gone up."

That is the one part that I found very interesting regarding the article. Dance music in general has been on a quiet but nice rise. The fact that CHR stations throughout the country (not just Z-100) is playing Chris Willis, Cascada, Bob Sinclair, September is proof on the growing impact of dance music in general....to which, in the case of NYC, it probably wouldn't get that big of a push if it wasn't for a Pulse 87 being around. And if 'KTU is improving with its ratings along WITH Pulse (albeit the non-indication on Arbitron's end regarding Pulse), then the "big picture" here is that things are coming along rather nicely and improving for dance music in general.

Based on how things are going, I have launched a national campaign to try to get 10 stations in the country to go rhythmic CHR/dance by the end of 2009. Yeah, I have my distractors out there but I'm going to do it. :)

Do you hear yourself?

Yup....I hear myself! ;D And no I'm not running for President! LOL.

It was "tongue in cheek", but I am serious about wanting to make noise and try to get at least 10 stations to go rhythmic CHR/dance by the end of 2009.

It's not an easy goal, will be the first to admit that, but we're going to try anyway.

I think getting 10 dance songs on ChR to be hits would be a more substainable goal for 2009.

I'm going gutsy with what I'm trying to do and I'll admit, it will be tough.

But the 10 dance songs? That I do see as a sure thing happening. :) I'll even go and say 20 for good measure, with at least 3 of them on any given rotation at the same time.

Tony, I think the 10 songs post was scarcastic; read it again

Tony, I give you alot of credit for what you do. It's attitudes like yours that change things. You get slamed alot on these boards........not sure why but you do a great job of promoting dance and have made a difference. Things are looking up for dance music which is once again becoming more mainstream as hip, hop's popularity declines slightly.
Dance has always been huge in Europe and has never caught on as much in the US. but that is undoubtedly due to lack of exposure and missconception as to what the genre actually is.
Pulse 87 is a great cutting edge station. Musically I believe they are one of the best in the country.
I'd love to see them on a better frequency but if we look at Pulse as an experiment...ie, niche format on a niche station...it generates buzz, which it has then you get exposure. It's similar to what urban radio did back in the 80's when it aired in midsize markets on college and non commercial stations. It got exposure, became mainstream, got it's own stations and began rotation on CHR stations. Next thing we knew you had white kids in the suburbs listening to it and white rappers nonetheless.

Ditto on all of the above!

And talk about misconceptions...I couldn't believe it (well, almost) when I saw someone utter this line over on the "other" board, in response to Tony's post there on this very same Daily News article about Pulse:

"How much dancing can one do while driving a car?"

Thanks Jeffrey! :)

If there's anything that I've learned over the years doing the coalition and getting involved with dance music and radio, it's that you have to build a "thick skin" from those that are "anti" because there is a lot of misconceptions and ignorance regarding dance music and its perceptions/stereotypes. And while one cannot change a person's concrete opinion or musical preference, at the very least you want people to be tolerant of those that prefer musical genres that may be deemed misunderstood, especially one that is as complex such as dance music because of the multiple genres and the variety of audiences geared to those genres. And yeah, I get slammed. It's part of that thick skin.....and if getting bashed left and right due to my highly opinionated thoughts will make things better for dance music as a whole, then so be it. :)

So when Neo11 noted that comment, it's something I get all of the time so it isn't as if I was "shocked" to hear such a thing. I'll give an answer and be fair about it.

The day I stop fighting for dance music acceptance will be the day I die. And if things for dance music in this country gets on an even (or higher) ground with pop, r&b, hip-hop, country or any contemporary genre, I still want to continue what I am doing...even if it is to strengthen what is already strong for future generations.

Thank you! :) Thanks to everyone that has "put up with me" on one level or another over the years!

Yesterday when I was driving from NJ to eastern Maryland, I was dancing in my seat to Super 91.7. It kept me awake! Nothing wrong with it.
