Pulse 87, still without salaried staff, adds an evening DJ to its roster

Congratulations to Eutopia for joining the Pulse 87 staff!

Right now the revenue Pulse 87 is generating is coming mostly from VIPs who pay $5 a month or $50 a year. Assuming just 50 VIPs, that's about $2500 a year. There's a little additional revenue coming from club appearances and website advertising. Let's assume the total revenue is $3000 a year. That would probably not cover their streaming costs.

But considering how people love this station and the fact that they got thousands of donations last year when they begged for money on the air, I think the online version could turn a profit just from VIPs who subscribe just to support the station. As you may have thought, I was the very first person to fork over $50 the first day they announced the VIP subscriptions.

As for Original Hot 97, Joel's other online station, the stream is literally static, and the songs listed as "new" music on the home page are 3 years old.

interesting article, especially this section... "However, Salkowitz doesn’t agree with the label calling the station a fringe format that appeals to club crazies. “I remind people that this is the format that beat [perennially top-rated] Z100…People seem to forget that.”"

when did Pulse ever beat Z100?

That explains why Original Hot 97 was taken down from FMQB. It was great listening to the old imaging combined with the new sound tweaked in. Guess Pulse is his "cash cow."

Actually, I think he was referring to when Hot 103/97 beat Z-100 back in the days.

But "club crazies"? I take offense to that because people WERE excited when Pulse came back on since we didn't have a dance station like this for years. But not everyone who loves dance music go to clubs. People just enjoy the high energy sounds that terrestrial radio hasn't offered in a while.

It's called SUPPORT and hopefully when another dance station enters the FM dial in the future, the fans of music, whether they are clubbers or not will show the same enthusiasm. :)

There is no such thing as an internet radio cash cow
I also saw that Pulse used StreamTheWorld for their streaming purposes, and that will run an internet broadcaster around $200-$300 a month, excluding royalties!

So if they have around 100 VIPs, they'll break even on streaming costs. It wouldn't be too hard to find 100 P1s who would pay $5 a month or $50 a year to keep their favorite station alive.

KTU was #1 waaaay back when it was a true dance station and they did beat Z100 who is the "favorite child"
Since both stations are owned by Clearchannel, corporate wanted Z100 to be #1 because a "higher up"'s baby was Z , that's when things changed. Their solution: Get rid of Jammin' 105 so that KTU could play the oldies so that Z100 could be #1.

Hello !

Not meaning that it draws cash, but it has it's listeners. With the launch of Pulse on the web, and how much listeners it attracted, looks like Joel's focus is not on the Original Hot 97.
