Q100 snubbing some of the highest charting songs?????

lowpower said:
A quick glance definitely says that the statement above about Cumulus ignoring this song is definitely true. Does anyone know for a fact this song is researching in the 25+ demo though? These stations could all target that upper demo which this song may not do well with. WZYP and KBEA are both playing it 6-7 times a week but they are the only ones. Everyone else has that 1 countdown spin.

Looking at Mediabase national callout data from today, Top 40, persons 25-34, "Shake It" does not even break the top 20. It is #25 on the list with a big negative rating (33%). Today's RateTheMusic report for Top 40, persons 25-34, puts the song at #18 on the list.

Well sure its showing those sort of research figures.... NOW. That song's been out since March/April. It's a crispy critter now.

I mean what's up with that? I've been behind Q100 since day one. It also plays 24/7 on my living room stereo for background noise when I'm not home...not to mention all day at work! But after listening a little to Star-94 and checking out Radio & Records, I am all too curious as to why Q either takes SO LONG to play a new song or mostly they don't play the song at all! I have compiled a list of songs that are not only gaining fast on the airplay charts but they're songs being played on every other Top-40 station except Q100.........

METRO STATION "Shake It" -- This one baffles me the most because it's #3 in the nation! Not to mention, it's #1 (Airplay) on many, many local staions! But I have yet to hear it ONCE on Q-100! ??? WHY?

Other songs that Q-100 (as a "full blown Top-40") are NOT playing include:

MIA - "Paper Planes"
ONE BLOCK RADIUS - "You Got Me"
WE THE KINGS - "Check Yes Juliet"
SEPTEMBER - "Cry For You"
PUSSYCAT DOLLS - "When I Grow Up" (seriously! NOT heard on Q100)!
SECONDHAND SERENADE - "Fall For You"
BOYS LIKE GIRLS - "Thunder"
MILEY CYRUS - "7 Things"

.....and the REALLY scary thing is that 4 of those songs are played royally in AUGUSTA!! (WHHD 98.3)

But ALL of them.....NOT on Q100!

So, my question is, Why say "ALL THE HITS Q100" when they don't play ALL the hits?

Thanks for letting me rant! ;D

Any thoughts?

They added PCD's "When I Grow Up"

"Shake It" peaked at #20 in the national callout survey on 8/7. That's the only time it has ever cracked the top 20 in Mediabase's surveys. Again, this is data for persons 25-34. In-tab was 582.

What did it do 18-24 and 18-34 females? C'mon... they didn't avoid the song because of NATIONAL research. Or did they? I'd like to know what research this song has for Atlanta...

Q100 doesn't have any room to play all the hits since a Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20/INOJ song must play at least once an hour. I think every single released from the three must be played within a 24 hour period at Q100. Not to mention Never Ever by All Saints (which turns 10 years old on the top 40 chart this week). Someone at the Q really must be a Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20/and INOJ lover. I like these groups but start straying away from recurrents and bloom into all the current hits on the chart. I did notice that WMGB/Macon 95.1 and WZNS/Fort Walton Beach, FL 96.1 do the same thing as other Cumulus CHRs do too. I started listening to Q100 back in the day because of its "all the hits" nature. Now it is a mirror of Star 94.

They were playing a lot of MB20/Rob Thomas before the new PD even took over.

You guys, it has nothing to do with the PD. A Cumulus PD has very little say in the music that gets played on his or her station.

It's all Jan The Man Jeffries! He decides what Cumulus CHRs play. And they all sound just as white-bread and safe as Q100. That station was miles better when it was under Susq. and it's a damn shame Cume-less ruined it.

Take a look at:
WWWQ/Atlanta
KRBE/Houston
WHOT/Youngstown
WZYP/Huntsville
Y102/Montogomery
WTWR/Toledo
WWCK/Flint
WAOA/Melbourne

They'll all look the same, except for maybe one or two songs!
There's 2 examples where there IS a difference. KBEA/Quad Cities, IA is much more Mainstream Hit sounding than the rest. Cumulus owns an AC in that cluster.
The other is WWKL/Harrisburg, PA. Cumulus owns the dominant Hot AC in that market and therefore the CHR is heavily Rhythmic.

Wanna blame someone...don't blame the PD, blame Jan Jeffries. He's ruined every Cumulus CHR he's touched.

STAR 94 is honestly more current based than Q100 is. They don't play as many of the rhythmic-leaning songs as Q100, as was mentioned earlier in this thread, but they ARE focused more current, where Q100 tends to play more gold. STAR sticks to currents and recurrents mostly.
They could really re-stake their spot in the market as a true, straight-up-the-middle Mainstream CHR. I'd love to see it happen, but I suppose if things are working for them the way they are......
If it ain't broke, don't fix it?

"Shake It" is getting its highest callout numbers with 18-24 women right now. It's at #11 in the latest survey from 8/7. Familiarity is high and burn is low. This is much, much better than the numbers for older CHR females.

The Cumulus CHR stations are in pretty small markets except for KRBE and Q100. Guidance is really important in this kind of situation, as you are often dealing with new PDs or PDs without a great deal of experience. Jan Jeffries comes from smaller markets and had some huge successes in places like Roanoke. Larger markets have more local decision making (although in every case the mantra is "follow the research and the chart"), but still have guidance: at Cumulus it's Jan Jeffries, at other companies it's a consultant (which Jan Jeffries is the Cumulus consultant)

Let's see where Cumulus is winning in CHR:

Q100 is beating Star 94 in Atlanta
KRBE (104.1) is beating Hot 95.7 in Houston
Hot 101 is beating Q92 (WDJQ)/Canton in Youngstown and is also beating 95.9 Kiss FM in 12+ and 25-54
Q92.3 is beating Z102.9/Cedar Rapids in Waterloo
Hot 104.7 is beating KKCK (99.7)/Marshall, MN in Sioux Falls
In the Quad Cities, All Hit 98.9 flipped to K-Love and B100 is the winner.
In Bismarck, Y93 went AC and Hot 97.5 is the winner.
In Mobile, if they thought CHR could make more money than country, Hot 104 would've forced WABB (97.5) out of format.
WWKL (Hot 92) is beating both 99.3 Kiss FM and WLAN/Lancaster in Harrisburg.
Tower 98.3 was beating 92.5 Kiss FM in Toledo in the 18-34 demo and will beat Kiss again.
KROC (106.9)/Rochester, MN beat 98.7 Kiss FM in Mason City, IA so they flipped it to Kiss Country 98.7
KROC is beating Z93 (WIZM)/La Crosse, WI in Rochester

Cumulus is the Wal-Mart of radio. They became the #2 radio company by station count (behind CC) by getting large numbers of stations in small markets (which helped them control the spot market), and are now just moving into the larger markets, such as by the purchase of Susquehanna's radio biz which got them into ATL.

BTW: You mentioned Mobile, AL. Does Cumulus Top-40, WZNS/Fort Walton Beach, FL reach up there? Just curious....
