Q102's New Morning Show To Be Announced Today...

As a former Q102 employee, I am undecided on how I feel about Elvis doing Philly from NYC...when I got to Philly to start my gig, I noticed 1 huge thing...Philly has a very LOYAL local feel. I'm eager to see how it all fairs.

Sure, we should give it a chance...but I'm afraid this might be 96.5's chance to exploit that Q is no-longer local in the morning...and this might hurt Q.

We shall see if the Elvis show's content can overshadow the non-local appeal.

all this "local vs. non-local" is ridiculous. stern proved everyone wrong time and time again as he eventually spanned the country. the battle is "good vs. bad." Q102 is driven by the music anyway.

yeah but Stern made the show local to Philly. He talked about it a lot. The feud with Debella was a major part of the show. Thats the difference.

He made it local when he got here and for the three years until he beat DeBella and held the funeral. The show wasn't local to Philly after that, yet it still had ratings for almost 15 years. And Philly was his first syndicated market (with DC soon after). He didn't do that local stuff after he started in L.A., his fourth market. But he still got ratings.

That said, syndicated shows can beat local shows, but they have to be a lot better. If a syndicated show is only marginally better than a local show, the local show will probably win.

Then again, winning in the ratings isn't the goal. It's generating profits. Sometimes you don't need as much revenue to do that if your costs are down because you're paying for a syndicated show instead of local hosts.

The show they do is not based on local talk ANYWHERE, nor is it a bash the competition show. It's a pop culture, lifestyles, what the listener is talking about, show. It works wherever there demo wants to hear that kind of show, done very well. Whether they mention the Liberty Bell, The Empire State Building or South Beach isn't important to their show or their listeners. I think the only people who worry about that stuff is us radio guys who mostly don't listen to that type of show. The local argument doesn't work well, when the local shows in a given market aren't capturing their audiences hearts. Or if they are, it isn't because they mention neighborhoods.

As a listener of Y100, Elvis premiered down here in May 2006 - the ratings went through the roof. We have one local guy on the air named "Froggy". He was with the station for years when it was Kenny and Footy in the Morning. They took Froggy in as the local guy to represent South Florida. I'm pretty sure Diego will have the same duties. Froggy is on air everyday communicating with Elvis and the crew up at Z100. Froggy cuts in for local traffic and weather. As for News - Carolina does a taping for NY and Miami local news, then into local commercials. Actually, it's very cool how they manage the timing. Even with the delay, it actually works. What's playing on Z100 (when they play music), is on Y100. So they are playing the music from Z. I think this could work in Philly, but I don't know the area/market too well. So, I'm sure your local guy Diego will fit in just fine. Elvis just said this morning that Diego used to be his intern when Elvis was at Q102 20 years ago!! LOL :)

I think the Elvis Duran show will do well in Philly. They have a unique group of talent that has an appeal to people of all ages. I wouldn't be surprised if the show went straight to the top. Doesn't seem to matter to people in Miami that it's not local. So why would it be different in Philly?

News and weather for NYC and Philly can be combined, so they may not need to do local stuff for Philly. But no one in Philly cares about the traffic in the Lincoln Tunnel (and no one in NYC cares about traffic over the Ben Franklin bridge) :-/

Do you think Elvis Duran will be expanding to other neighboring markets? I think KC101 or Kiss 95.7 will pick them up next.

Elvis Duran on Kiss 95.7 will probably mean "Wal-Mart Jeff" will have to actually start working at Wal-Mart!

Elvis probably won't stop until he captures the entire Eastern seaboard, at this point.

Yes, the show is not nationwide. That is true. But it's still not a local Philly show. Plus, there is the rumor that they're going to air Ryan Seacrest's show. Not sure if that's midday or afternoon. But that's a lot of non-local programming, in prime hours. Will that really work?

Seacrest does a west coast morning show. I don't see how a morning show in middays will work for a CHR station, which needs more music in middays than it has in mornings. Though, maybe they won't air it live. Maybe they'll air it on delay during PM drive.

Anyone know why they're waiting an entire month between the announcement and the debut of the show? They're already doing the show, why not just slap it on the air right away?
