Q105.1 and Jack FM starting to sound alike

I guess you can still call them an oldies station, but I've been hearing some recent songs from the 90s and even this decade on Q105.1. I noticed this about a month or so ago when they were playing "Rhythm of My Heart" by Rod Stewart and Jimmy Cliff's remake of the old Johnny Nash hit "I Can See Clearly Now". Later on, I heard Aerosmith's 1998 hit "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" and Santana's "Smooth" from 1999. In recent days, I heard them play Michael McDonald's remake of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and, just today, Uncle Kracker's remake of "Drift Away", both which came out earlier this decade.

I do know that oldies music would have to evolve by player more recent music. Since those aforementioned songs and artists are familiar favorites to their target audience, I get the reason why they would get airplay. But is the music too soon to be played on an oldies station? Personally, I have no problem with it. They almost sound like Jack, except they're not as all over the map as Jack (though I'm sure Q has a large pool of songs to pick from that could put them all over the map as well).

As for the audio processing on Jack and Q105.1, they do sound similar... THIN!!! It seems like the New South stations understand the theatrics of audio processing better than Clear Channel. As for music, I was up in the delta last week enjoying the music on BOB FM in Greenwood. Formatically they may sound like a smaller market but the music mix is much better than JACK!

does Q105 still use super hits of the 60's & 70"s or have they gone to just super hits?Q processing could be better.sounds Orban to me, but last time i heard Jack with the Omnia 5 ex,they were awesome...

Back when I worked for Clear Channel, they were big Orban fans. Q105 is probably using an Optimod. If Jack is using an Omnia, they're sure not pushing it very hard. But then, I like heavy processing. I know everybody doesn't agree with me on that. However, I believe radio should sound bigger than life. After all, it's all a show. I have not heard anything in digital processing yet that tops an Omnia when it's set up right. In analog, you can't beat an optimod with prisms. When I worked at B-97 in New Orleans back in the 80's, that's whet we had. Did it ever more sound GREAT!

i think the current trend is moving away from heavy processing in favor of a more open brighter sound, ac,oldies, country, but to each his own with the flavor they like.when i did chr it was a balls to the wall approach but got fatiguing after awhile.Ditto on the Omnia. i run an omnia 6 and also the dsp-extra both awesome sounding boxes.I think if you listened to Jack in Jackson that omnia 5ex would grow on you. They really sound great..Q105.1 is too busy in the mid and high's. Take good ears to tweak these babies.IMHO
