I don't know much about Apex. Seems like they own a successful alternative or AAA station in Charleston.
They had been in the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham market a long time ago with (then) WLXY "ARRO 100.7" a classic rock station. They took it to a better facility and flipped to rock as "Z-100" on 100.5 MHz to compete with Citadel's famous WRAX. Z-100 was personally my favorite of the two, with a slightly mellower bend and less corporate feel.
Apex got out of the market in 2005 by selling the station to Citadel, who put WRAX on the frequency. The whole thing was a major sting to people who loved the station but hated The X and it withered and died. It later went AAA as "warm 100", ugh. Citadel would eventually piss everyone off again when they replaced the AAA with talk as WAPI-FM.
Apex recently got back in Tuscaloosa again, this time with a brand new build out on 105.1 MHz. They're LMA'ing it out to Cox, who is doing urban as "105-1 Jamz", a compliment to Birmingham's "95-7 Jamz".
