Qubo to air Daily Late-Night Retro Cartoons Block starting September 28

The sad thing about Filmations is when they were bought out by L'oreal. They shut down the studio without warning and layed everyone off. Filmation was later bought by Halmark Cards, who transfered the film to SD videotape and some idiot decided they no longer needed the original film masters and they threw them away. So all new copies are made from videotape, making it impossible to make fresh remasterd prints for HD. The Archies Hour from around 1970 had most of the music cut out when it went into syndication. The songs are now missing from that season. Nobody knows what happened to them. I remember that season. Had some pretty good songs in it.

Furthermore, some of the videotape masters exist only in PAL format, leading to some NTSC releases to run a tad faster.

I have The Archie Show season 1 box set, and it's sped up so fast, it's unwatchable :'(

Alright, time out. What is SD videotape? PAL format? NTSC? (That last one may have been explained on R-I in the past but I forget what it is. :-[ )

The show is called "Night Owl."
It was in there with "Reminiscing" and "Lady."
Big time hit!

The song, circa mid 80s, goes a little something like this.....

There's a bar right across the street
He's got a need he just can't beat
Out on the floor he shuffles his feet awaaaaayy
He'll get the girl cause he looks so fine
He's gonna win her every time
You know he will, he's dressed to kill
He's a night owl
yadayadayada

Here ya go: I hurrd this is the new theme song

There’s a show that sounds really sweet
It’s got cartoons you just can’t beat
It starts at 12, at night and not in the day
They’ll get the viewers ‘cause their shows are fine
He-Man and She-Ra every time
You know it kills, qubo’s cartoon thrills, it’s called “Night Owl”

Move on, from 12 to 5 eastern time they’re calling
To belong, it’s cartoons in the night
Be strong, BraveStarr’s coming up at 2, stop bawling
Stay up til dawn, until the Night Owl’s gone

What will become of the Night Owl kind?
Will they fall asleep before it’s their time?
Wearing their selves out all the night for cartoon glee
Filmation’s Ghostbusters is in their soul
They have a need to view Spliced gold!
They always will, they’re out there still
They’re the Night Owls

Repeat chorus
Repeat 1st verse
Repeat chorus

"SD", I think, means "Standard Definition" -- since it's the only source available, it precludes its ability for conversion to HD, which requires film.

PAL is the television color format used mainly in Europe, Australia most of mainland Asia and Parts of South America. PAL generally uses 625 frames a second (except Brasil, which uses 525 frames, like the US).

NTSC is the color format used in North America, the rest of South America, Japan and South Korea -- this generally uses 525 frames per second. When NTSC is converted to PAL, as it is 100 frames short, programs generally seem sped up. When PAL shows are converted to NTSC, there is no speed change, though any motion may look blurry.

Yeah I'd say SD is "Standard Def."
I think the 525 and 625 numbers are screen pixel line resolutions, though. The frame speeds are like 25 here and 30 per second there, aren't they?

And I think the slight difference in the AC power wattage between PAL countries and NTSC countries [like the difference between our 120v vs. Europe's 220v on hair dryers and appliances] that makes some small difference in the frames per second translation and thus in how they look when one is converted to the other and played back.

Even though the difference is small, most machines won't play both formats because of the power differences the machines use for playback. If I had my college notes from the early 1990s, I'd check on that for sure. I'm sure some technical person could be more specific. :)

That's what I meant.

While it is true for many consumer VHS machines, I believe most DVD players can play PAL DVDs on NTSC TVs and vice versa, with the region code the only thing in the way (though many players have secret ways of having that changed or disabled).
