Question about the 1960 AFL Football season on ABC.

Who were the announcers doing the AFL games on ABC until they lost their contract to NBC in 1964? I think Frank Buck was one of the announcers.

Curt Gowdy was the announcer for the game of highest interest each Sunday. I believe he was jointed by Paul Christman on the color commentary. Charlie Jones also did the play-by-play of some of those games.

Question about AFL TV blackouts

In the 1960's, NFL games were blacked out, sellout or not, but my question, as the title of my post suggests, is...

were AFL games blacked out on ABC (or beginning in 1965, on NBC, when the rights transferred to the Peacock [which had lured Curt Gowdy from ABC])?

Did the AFL/NFL merger just before the 1966 season (resulting in, among other things, that phenomenon called the Super Bowl) affect whatever blackout policy the AFL had?

In answer to David's original question, the main crews for ABC's AFL coverage in 1960 were:

A. Jack Buck and George Ratterman
B. Les Keiter and (Bullet) Bill Dudley or Elmer Angsman

Others included on pxp Bob Wolff, Bob Neal, Charlie Jones and John Ferguson
Others included on color Dick Danehe, Ron Waller, Fred Benners and Paul Mannaseh

Buck and Ratterman called the AFL Championship between the LA Chargers and Houston Oilers.

Curt Gowdy and Paul Christman were the main voices for ABC's coverage of NCAA football in 1960 (and 1961 as well). They would join AFL coverage starting in 1962.

Great research,Timmy B!

Guys,

Glad to help! ;)

I thought I'd add the ABC-AFL crews from 1961-1964:

1961:
A. Jack Buck, George Ratterman (also called the AFL Championship Game (HOU-SD))
B. Bob Neal, Elmer Angsman
C. Charlie Jones (working solo)
Lee Giroux may have also called a game solo.

1962:
A. Curt Gowdy, Paul Christman (also AFL Championship (DAL-HOU))
B. Jack Buck, George Ratterman
C. Charlie Jones (mostly solo, sometimes with Ratterman)

1963:
A. Curt Gowdy, Paul Christman (also AFL Championship (BOS-SD))
B. Jack Buck, George Ratterman
C. Charlie Jones (solo, a couple of late season games with Max Boydston)

1964:
A. Curt Gowdy, Paul Christman (with Ratterman, also AFL Championship (SD-BUF))
B. Charlie Jones, George Ratterman
C. Charlie Brockman, Elmer Angsman
(Lotta "man's!")

When NBC began televising the AFL in 1965, except for Brockman, all the ABC guys followed suit.

Charlie Jones and George Ratterman were the only two who covered the AFL on a network basis from start to finish.

Hope this is of interest. Any questions regarding vintage pro football telecasts on TV, please let me know and I will do my best to help.
