R.I.P.: Buck Owens, Country Singer and "Hee Haw" Co-Host

Legendary country singer Buck Owens has died at the age of 76. According to this SF Gate.com story, Owens died early today (March 25th) at his home in Bakersfield, California.

Although Owens was a very successful country singer, with numerous hits through the years, he was perhaps best known as co-host of the long-running TV series "Hee Haw". As you probably know, "Hee Haw" began on CBS in 1969 as a Summer replacement, earning high enough ratings to return in midseason. Although dumped by CBS in 1971, when the network purged all of it's "rural" programming regardless of popularity ("Hee Haw" finished 1970/71, it's last season on CBS, as the 16th most popular prime-time show for the entire season; ironically, it was the show's best season in terms of ratings), "Hee Haw" continued in first-run syndication until 1993. Owens continued as co-host through the 1985/86 season.

Man,I'm in a state of shock over this!! Not only did I like Buck Owens but I have nearly all of his records and enjoyed him on Hee Haw as well with Roy Clark. Also,he also shared the same birthday as I(August 12th).

Great singer and songwriter and also a great host of Hee Haw. R.I.P Buck!!!

You'll be missed and you're truly a legend! :(

Here's a more detailed story on Yahoo.

In most cities after it moved into first-run syndication, "Hee Haw" would often run at 7 P.M. (ET/PT).

Here in Boston during it's syndicated run, I believe it ran in a fringe timeslot, maybe even the middle of the night. I also think there were some years when the show did not run here at all.

The first show I can remember seeing Buck Owens on was "Midwestern Hayride", which goes back to the mid 60s.
