R.I.P.: Former Susquehanna Radio President Art Carlson

What was his home town/state?

I'd imagine that Art Carlson would have been 40 or 42 at the time of the TV show. It would have been fun to see his reaction.
I wonder if he was ever called Big Guy, even before the TV show. Probably was.
No doubt, he was called that a lot after Gordon Jump (who passed at 71 himself) was given the handle.

I did news for a short while at a Susquehanna station. Never met Art Carlson personally. But the station (and seemingly the chain) was run as though it were immune from the financial fluctuations by which many other networks were fraught. Except for Miami, there was not really a major-market station in the group. Yet, being emplyed by Susquehanna was like working for Mount Rushmore.

God bless, Arthur Carlson.

Art usually came while I was on the air so I'd give him a wave and a smile and that was it. He and his minions would meet with our head honchos and rake Harry and Terry over the coals and list every sin they committed but never got any feedback on my performance..I never knew if that was good or bad...

So much for loyalty... Didn't Susquehanna dump WARM and the rest of the local cluster right after Art retired? I think the "for sale" sign was on the door before Art's car left the parking lot for the last time.

As I remember it, Hugh Wilson worked for Susquahanna. I can't remember his position, but Art Carlson was the guy Harry West would run too when he was pissed or felt he was getting screwd by someone there. Susquahanna was owned by Louis Appell and his Mother who owned Pfaltzgraff. And WKRP of course was owned by Arthur Carlson and his Mother. Funny how some radio stations here in nepa are still being run like WKRP today, by people who know nothing about radio.

at the time "WKRP"was in development Susquhanna owned an FM station in Cinncy (the sound of your life) . Iwas told back then by someone who worked at corporette in downtown York that the "big guy " on the TV show was,in part , based on the real Art Carolson on east market street in York, pa. It seems one of the folks who developed the show worked for Susquhanna at one time. not sure if it is completly true or not..but it's a good story. RIP

I was told he contacted CBS asking them to change the name....guess they said no.
