Radio Bop to Honor The Day The Music Died...50 Years Later

On February 3, 2009, Radio Bop (www.RadioBop.com - also on iTunes Radio under Golden Oldies) will break format to remember The Day The Music Died...50 Years Later with a special tribute to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson to be repeated throughout the day.

Very cool!

Like the day JFK was shot I remember exactly where I was when I heard about the plane crash killing these three artists. KAIR in Tucson had just the night before done a parody of Valen's "La Bomba". Then the next morning he was gone. Who knows how his career might have gone but undoubtedly he would have accelerated the rise of Hispanic R'nR and could have introduced a whole new genre. Holly was already a well known performer and musician and cut down at the height of his short career. Richardson was a background player and DJ and may have gone on to become as well known as Rick Dees and the Wolfman.

What is the Big Boppers real name, I've heard

Jiles Perry Richardson

Jape Richardson

He was also a decent songwriter besides his hits he penned the following:

White Lightning for George Jones
Running bear for Johnny Preston

His given name was Jiles Perry Richardson.

At times he had been listed as J.P. Richardson, aka, The Big Bopper. Once, I've forgotten the date, the London Times had an article about him, I think it was after the tragic plane crash, and somehow the intitials became twisted into Jape.

Get it? Ja-Pe became Jape.

Leave it to the Brits.

BTW, just saw a couple stories on the net saying his son is going to auction JP's casket on eBay. Truth? We'll see.

I wonder how many so called "Oldies Stations" will forget, or treat lightly, this historical event in the infancy of that dreaded animal Rock N' Roll. This was the first major catastrophe in Rock N' Roll history, the many that followed over the years, prompted the term, "Rock N' Roll Heaven".

Elvis the he King of Rock N' Roll is already up there, one day the queen of Rock N' Roll (Little Richard)will be there also.
