They are not mutually exclusive.

They ARE interested in THE RATINGS in target DEMOS- some have products targeting 18-34, 18-49, 25-54, 35-64 (fewer and fewer for the first and last demo) and some get more narrow within those cells, but 18-49 and 25-54 ratings rankings greatly influence spot buys.
