Radio Ink Ranks the Leading News Stations. Guess Who Is on TOP!

The new owners of this board, Radio Ink, have taken a page from Michael Harrison and Talkers, the guy who bought the old domain name, and ranked the "top 20" news stations. Radio Ink's article says these ratings are based on "a station’s commitment to providing local information to the community, longevity in the format, revenue, ratings, and how the stations sound.

Not surprising WTOP comes out on top, given how high they place in ranking of station billings. Interesting that in New York where CBS has two all news stations, that 1010 WINS with the Group W news format, beat WCBS with the CBS all news format (KYW also retains a loose version of the Group W format). It's curious that LA's conservative talk station KFI is placed so much higher than all news KNX.

#1) WTOP - Washington DC
#2) 1010 WINS - New York City
#3) KFI-AM - Los Angeles
#4) KCBS-AM - San Francisco
#5) WBBM-AM/FM - Chicago
#6) WCBS-AM - New York City
#7) WBZ-AM - Boston
#8) WSB-AM/FM - Atlanta
#9) KYW-AM - Philadelphia
#10) WWJ-AM - Detroit
#11) KIRO-FM - Seattle
#12) WBT-AM/FM - Charlotte
#13) KNX-AM - Los Angeles
#14) KKOB-AM -Albuquerque
#15) WBAP-AM & FM - Dallas
#16) KTRH-AM - Houston
#17) KFBK-AM & FM - Sacramento
#18) KMBZ-AM & FM - Kansas City
#19) KRMG-AM & FM - Tulsa
#20) WGAN & WGIN - Portland, ME

I'm surprised that News-Talk 750 AM & 95.5 FM WSB is #8 here in Atlanta! I'm also disappointed that
it's competition, All-News 106.7 WYAY-FM didn't make the top 20.

In all fairness, KFI amd KIRO are not all news stations but they do fit the original definition of news-talk with morning news magazines and active local news operations. If people in their markets look to them as news sources, I guess they would qualify as "news stations."

I wouldn't call Bill Handel's show a morning news magazine. KFI is a talk station with a news staff, still it's clearly a talk station.

Actually "News/Talk" is the wrong term to describe talk stations where the main focus is news -- it should be "News-Talk." A station like WBZ that's a hybrid of all-news and talk shows depending on daypart would more accurately be described as "News/Talk."

Okay, we'll try this again.

WGAN? From market #90? Better than... uh... WLW, KGO, KDKA, KFAB, WIBC, WHAS???

WGAN? With 4 hours a day of local programming? And 20 hours a day of plug-n-play network/syndicated stuff?

This must be a personal "kiss" to Saga. Maybe for buying ads in "Radio Ink." Hey, it's free enterprise.

I just hope none of you are working more than 4 hours a day. Apparently, it's not necessary!

Albuquerque's KKOB @ #14? Wow, quite a leap for a Duke City station, even with 50K blowtorch status. No cities in NM boast population of 1-million, let alone Albuquerque. None are even close. Must have been their billing. A couple of figures at KKOB are old aquaintances of mine from college radio, so I'm happy for KKOB.
