Radio Insight: Eastern Washington University To Discontinue Operations Of KEWU-FM

I am not surprised by this and I'm surprised how long it managed to grasp on. When I worked at KCWU 88.1 Ellensburg in college, they were talking of taking over KEWU. There really wasn't much mention of it after that quarter though.

I would bet that conversations have been taking place with Spokane Public Radio. They could use another signal to solidify their programming in the area. There have been examples of where a university retains the license, while the NPR station takes over operations. That usually is beneficial for universities.

Or EMF. Spokane doesn't have a full powered K-Love signal yet. 98.5 doesn't really come in very strong in Downtown Spokane.

"Spokane's POSITIVE...ENCOURAGING K-LOVE. 89.5 KEWU Spokane...98.5 Grand Coulee" in 3...2..1...
"KLSP" calls are available, too!

I'll be rolling tape on this station a lot before they sign-off. This is a big loss to eastern WA, loved having them on the dials whenever I drove through the area. Now down to two favorites in this city. Shine 104.9 (local CCM) and KPND.

"Spokane's POSITIVE...ENCOURAGING K-LOVE. 89.5 KLSP Cheney-Spokane...98.5 Grand Coulee...93.3 Tri-Cities, and reaching around the world at klove.com."

They may or may not include 93.3 but it does get out quite far, including on the Palouse and just west of Spokane. Also, KEWU is licensed to Cheney, a sale/acquisition is unlikely to change that.

The OTHER option is NWPB buys it out, and relays KJEM on 89.5, possibly discontinuing the 89.9 in Pullman for that purpose (but probably not). Voila. Jazz restored.
But just wait, as EMF will make them an offer that Eastern will not refuse. Probably a few million for the reach of 700,000 people in the Spokane-CDA CSA.

They wouldn't discontinue 89.9 in Pullman. KEWU doesn't get out across the Palouse everywhere. Just in high places.

I don’t see EMF entering Spokane with klove in this fashion.

KJYR has been for sale for awhile. They prefer those upper commercial bands.

KJYR was bought by the Growing Christian Foundation a couple years ago and is airing a localized version of their Positive Life Radio network (branded as 'Joy 104.5'). I'm not aware of any plans to sell KJYR.

While EMF prefers commercial bands, they'll get their hands on whatever they can get, and right now 89.5 may be an obvious choice for them to enter Spokane with K-Love unless they move 98.5 closer to Spokane and/or add a booster that covers Spokane proper, or flips 101.9 from Air1 (unlikely).

KJYR is for sale on Radio TV Deals. Only one that make sense for the below.

Ad Headline Eastern Washington State FM with Boosters
Market Rank Mkt 51-100
Asking Price $ 450,000
More Stations? Stand Alone
Seller Financing? Cash Only Deal
Will Seller LMA? No
Description This is a nice regional network consisting of a main FM and four Boosters. Currently being operated with a non-commercial Christian music format, the license is still commercial so keeping it non-commercial or switching to commercial should pose no issues. All transmission equipment and an IP Intraplex system is included. A new owner will want to secure your own office/studio facilities. The price per pop is very reasonable. Contact MCH Enterprises for details.

I wonder if that listing was from a while back before the Growing Christian Foundation bought the station from Xana Oregon. I find it hard they'd want to sell, especially if they're expanding their reach to other places.

Could be. Xana never ran it as a CCM format as far as I know.

They didn't. They ran it as a Classic Country format until just before the sale, then Growing Christian Foundation flipped it to Christmas music, then to CCM. But to reiterate, I find it hard that they'd be looking to sell not very long after entering the market.

"CLASS C1 FM with Boosters in Washington State! This is a nice regional network consisting of a main FM (87kw) and four Boosters with rated market coverage. Currently being operated with a non-commercial Christian music format"

It is updated frequently. They have updated the listing for the purchase of K259BG that just occurred.

"SALE PENDING…FM TRANSLATOR in the commercial band. at Chehalis, Washington. Priced conservatively at ~$.50 price per pop based on Longley-Rice 60-dbu contours (2018 census). Asking price is $30,000. "

"Originally set to sign-off on December 31, the University has announced that while no new date for sign-off has been established, it will extend operations through the rest of the academic year in May. The new date “will allow Eastern more time to deal with the many complexities surrounding licensing and equipment. It will also minimize disruptions to EWU and students.” Starting on January 1, students will host 10 hours per week during weekday mornings, while they station will run automated Jazz the rest the time."

I hope they end up giving this station to NWPB to give KJEM even more of a reach. But will EMF, as I've said earlier, offer a dollar amount that EWU just cannot refuse? After all, 104.9 Shine (KEEH) is extremely popular in Spokane - usually in the top 5.
