Radio Kiribati 1440 In Alaska At Near Armchair Levels!

Local island music started waftiing in just before 0700UTC this morning, Sun. Aug 25th. By about 0740UTC is was alone on the channel and damn near arm chair levels from Radio Kiribati's (pronounced Kier-uh-buss) 9kw non directional signal at 4230 miles away!

Here is a video of my reception.. and it's audio fed right into my camera from the radio, not a phone held up to a speaker nonsense.. HOWEVER, i dont always like what the phone does to a signal that isnt perfect it kinda makes the signal sound noisier than it is

Very impressive. Glad they got the station back on the air. When I published Tropical Frontiers, I got a cassette of the station and a subscription to the government owned newspaper (a tiny 12 page half of tabloid size and in I-kiribati and English.)

Did you ever hear about the station on Kiritimati in the Phoenix & Line Islands Ministry in Kiribati. They were doing local information and lots of local music. Word was the government in the capitol got their undies bunched up on that one and threatened the operators. The truth is, with only two supply ships a year and not a bunch of contact with the federal government, their teeth are less lethal on Kiritimati than Tarawa. Would be interesting to know if the Kiritimati local station is still operating!

846? It was reportedly on a year ago and it was a simulcast of 1440 I thought, @b-turner

A DXer in Oklahoma with a life-long dedication to the hobby and publishing information about it, Glenn Hauser, has been trying almost every night for several years to get intelligible audio from this station. He has heard a modulated carrier a number of times, but the modulation was not intelligible. He reports recently that the carrier is no longer heard even with the same conditions that allowed reception in the past.
