Radio Memories of 1985's Hurricane Gloria

With Hurricane Irene expected to impact Connecticut this Sunday, I have a few radio memories of Hurricane Gloria that hit the state in September of 1985.

I remember listening to WTIC 1080 and WPOP 1410 which was all news at the time while working my first year as a letter carrier. WPOP was on top of its game that day giving WTIC competition. I remember WPOP interviewing the mayor of Hartford along with other interviews. Most important to me was the order given over WPOP and other media outlets recalling all letter carriers off the street and back to their offices.

Back at home in Bristol, I remember my folks listening to WBIS, Bristol's once local station until the station lost power. Also, my younger brother was listening to WPLR which was playing U2's "Gloria" over and over.

Who's going to break format and play the Weavers' "Goodnight Irene" this time around?

KC101 and sister station WAVZ simulcasted storm coverage anchored by operations manager Mike Scalzi. The stations aired Geoff Fox's live reports from Channel 8's audio. WDRC-FM ran Channel 3's 6:00 p.m. newscast. A lot of people did not have electricity for days and were able to use only radio.

WICC earned an 18 share in first place that fall.

With so many Connecticut stations operating with no news departments now, Sunday and Monday radio coverage could be an embarrassing amateur hour. Right now, the worst of the storm is supposed to hit us Sunday evening and through the night. Are the music stations that have contracts for canned bird-feed programming during those hours going to pre-empt and go live?

I'd settle for a loop of "Oh Babe, What Would You Say" by Hurricane Smith myself! :D

Well at about 3:30, WICC played "Oh Babe..." part of a rainy day songs countdown with Robby Bridges.
