RADIO ONE FAVORS URBAN AC RADIO OVER HIP HOP RADIO

Radio One Broadcasting favors Urban Adult Contemporary over Urban Contemporary radio or Mainstream Urban Radio because they always put the Urban AC format on their biggest signal in their radio markets.

Radio One took the hip hop format off of 100.3 FM where you all live in Philly and put Urban AC - Soul R&B music on 100.3 FM and moved the hip hop to the small signal at 107.9 FM.

I live in DETROIT, MI and Radio One did the same thing here back in 2005
when they moved my hip hop off of 105.9 FM and moved it over to the weak signal at 102.7 FM, then they moved Urban AC format over to 105.9 FM, in 2011 they signed a lease agreement with a privately independently owned radio station here in DETROIT at 107.5 FM which has a big signal and moved the hip hop over to 107.5, I was happy about that.

Why do Radio One favor Urban AC radio? Is it because Radio One Chairperson Cathy Hughes is elderly?

I don't think its so much favoring one over the other. I think the reason for the move here was the 100.3 the beat was getting beat badly by power99, and was declining. Meanwhile WRNB was showing signs it could compete with WDAS, but the signal was hindering those efforts.

So I think they just favor their top producing format (unless its not urban, then they flip the format. Y100 to this day was their biggest money maker in Philly) Radio one in the past has moved the beat from 103.9 to 100.3, in an effort to take on power99.

[/quote] now that's just wrong

If you have two formats, and one gets its audience from office building listeners and the other one gets its listeners from cars, you put the office format on the better signal.

Urban AC is a 25-54 format, while Urban Contemporary is more 18-34. So the AC format is a stronger sell.

There were two situations where Radio One kept the urban format OVERALL but modified it from mainstream to adult. 1) Charlotte's WCHH became WQNC in 2004, although I don't know if Davis Broadcasting picked up that station by now. 2) Same thing with WFUN St. Louis in 2004. In each case they were both standalones before being accompanied by a gospel station (Charlotte) and a hip hop station (St. Louis).

There are other exceptions to the rule of where R1 desires stronger signals for their ACs over their mainstreams; it can be the other way around. In the case of DC and Baltimore, the mainstream has a stronger signal over the AC but R1 left the formats and frequencies as they were due to the heritage of the intellectual properties. In the case of Atlanta, Columbus and Richmond, the hip hop station has been left intact while the urban AC format has switched frequencies (and added simulcasts). Dallas and Columbus have successful hip hop stations even though their urban ACs have not performed well there.
