Radio One Flips Praise 92.1 Houston to All-News?

When I saw this tonight it seemed like an April Fools joke!

Who would have thought?! I don't doubt the hole for this in Houston but All-News stations are supposed to be among the most expensive formats to run. Radio One is certainly trying some different things these days.

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/98281/radio-one-houston-to-flip-praise-92-1-to-news

And Praise was the home base for the Yolanda Adams Morning Show syndicated across pretty much all of Radio One's gospel stations.

Radio One will make another flagship station for her show possibly Praise 102.5 in Atlanta or Praise 104.1 in the DC area. Looks like their trying to bring in more cash flow to their clusters Selling off the 2 stations in NC and flipping to Jack FM in OH has been a shock to us all.

They are moving the format to HD2 channel on KMJQ 102.1 and online at PraiseHouston.com, so no, do not think there will be a NEW flagship station.

Would be nice if they could acquire a new translator in Houston to run Praise. Sorry, but I don't think HD2 is ever going to truly catch on. Those who still listen to Praise Houston will probably hear it online but listenership will significantly decrease.

Im sure Majic will add more Gospel music to their Sunday lineup to fill the void and AM's KYOK and KWWJ are still playing Gospel music. Im not sure if KOCH AM plays gospel on Sundays Im still surprised its on the air I guess the sale fell through

KCOH plays gospel in the first part of morning drive I believe.

The main gospel station in Houston now will again be KWWJ-AM. KTSU also plays gospel on Sunday.

While I understand why they are doing the flip, could it be that Radio One is trying to move away from "URBAN" type formats to upgrade the balance sheet?

Yes they are. Radio One is finally realizing every market is not Atlanta or Washington D.C. Look at the changes they made over the past year

WMOJ in Cincinnati is back to Rhythmic Oldies Now it appeals to Blacks and Whites
KSOC in Dallas Urban Oldies format is performing better than their old format and it's beating KBFB
WRNB is now on the powerful 100.3 signal its the top billing station in their Philly cluster

Now if they could have realized these markets are not the same and adjust to the times and demographics then maybe KKBT in Los Angeles would still be on the air. Instead of hiring overpriced washed up celebrity morning jocks they should have just focused on music. Leaning it Rhythmic with strong Urban sound to appeal to Hispanics Blacks and Whites. Selling it didn't resolve their money issues and they left a bad impression and a major void in Los Angeles. There out of Los Angeles good for them but they still have a long way to go. Sad enough they make Cumulus look good

What you written in bold was exactly what was the needed remedy for KKBT, but Barry Mayo was too stubborn to admit that and decided to turn it into an unnecessary UAC instead. It's obvious Radio One is clueless to programming stations outside of the heavily black radio markets.

Im sure someone in that building was shaking their head when that decision was made. Hiring Barry was not a smart move for a Mainstream Urban station. They should have hired someone who has experience with the Urban format. They were more focused on a morning star vs. the actual musical sound of the station. KKBT still had a strong listener base towards the end. But back to Priase in Houston moving it to a HD2 signal ??????? most of their listeners dont even know what a HD radio is and Im sure none of them are in a rush to buy one.

Radio One is giving away HD radios to those listeners will be displaced by the FM news switch over. My question to Radio One...are you going to pay for the installation of this sets in vehicles? What about those listeners who don't have cars or Internet access?
