Radio One Lost a bunch of money on WCFN The Fan.

I guess this answers my question on how much Radio One lost in revenue on trying a sports format here with no play by play.

This info is via the latest Tom Taylor newsletter

"We ran the ratings to zero doing sports” in Cincinnati, says Alfred Liggins. They converted former R&B oldies “Mojo” WMOJ (100.3) to CBS Sports Radio Net-affiliated “Fan” WCFN in January, and Liggins says “there just wasn’t any appetite for a station that didn’t have play-by-play,” and he wasn’t willing to wait it out. They’re back to doing an old-school R&B oldies format on 100.3, but Cincinnati market revenue fell 25% in second quarter. Liggins didn’t mention it, but the August 6 NOW Newsletter told you about a lawsuit filed by former Mojo jock Pat Barry (Barry Tingley, related to the format flip.

• Radio One records impairment charges for stations in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Charlotte. Yesterday’s NOW noted that we hadn’t seen any impairment charges in radio’s Q2 results – though Radio One hadn’t reported yet. Yesterday, the company disclosed that “impairment of long-lived assets for the three months ended June 30 increased to approximately $9.8 million,” related to non-cash charges for licenses in Philadelphia, Cleveland and Cincinnati. There was a $313,000 charge for licenses in Charlotte.

As noted, there wasn't much publicity for this station's sports format. How did they expect to get listeners? At the same time, it needed more time to develop. The station could have provided high school football play-by-play. That season is just about ready to begin........just a couple of weeks after the station shifted back to a music format.

They could've been the station airing LaSalle's football / boys basketball games, instead of ClassX.

It was a totally unsupported launch.

Wow. They probably weren't happy with their Mojo ratings. I'm sure that R O is just praying that they can get those numbers back.
Are they running boards for the new format?

Haven't seen any. I didn't see The Fan billboards, either. Must've put them all north of downtown. I didn't see them in Northern Kentucky.

I've only seen one billboard, so far. They are on the video board across from the old Kmart on rt 4 in Hamilton. The Fan was on the same board.

Is that an area where the prospective audience would be or live?

I've seen a billboard on my way to work along I-75 but can't recall where. It was an electronic billboard further south than the sports billboard that is also still up.

and for those who still think these things matter, I noticed today that the call letters have been changed to WOSM

WOSM must stand for We're Old School Music or if you are Pat Barry We Owe Some Money

Funny.

I was surprised to see the R O had to take a write down on the value of some of their licenses.
