Radio Show Sparks Controversy with Vice President Harris: Radio Still Can Create Headlines!

"Vice President Harris asserted that Joe Biden is president — not Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) — during a tense exchange on Charlamagne Tha God's Comedy Central show. Charlamagne asked Harris to name the country's "real president."

The nationally syndicated show got testy when Harris told Charlamagne he was acting like a Republican! And this is a good example of how personality radio can do important things that a streaming music service just can not accomplish!

And, also, this demonstrates how national network or syndicated shows can get access to the biggest names in every field... something that local shows in most markets can never hope to achieve.

I looked up the info on Charlamagne's radio show and it doesn't seem to be on any station in the West Coast states. One station in Las Vegas, another one in Tucson, another station in Albuquerque. Nothing in CA, OR, WA. Why would that be, if it's such a big show? Is there that big a difference in regional audiences for something like this?

For the moment, I think one of the issues is the 3 hour time difference.

But yours is a good question.

I believe that since the show is focused on African American audiences, and none of the West Coast markets have large Black populations, there is a need to do a morning show that attracts a broader audience. In fact, the urban stations depend on Hispanic and even non-Hispanic white listeners for much of their audience. Portland is less than 3% Black. LA is just over 6%. Seattle is 6.5%... and so on. As an example, the Urban station in LA has a morning show with Big Boy who has proven to attract Hispanics.

I guess Tucson and Albuquerque are exceptions to the rule, given that the African American population is low in these places.

Both are smaller over-radioed markets. Most stations can't do live and local, particularly on the marginal signals... so they go for a good national show.

There are lots of other nationally syndicated morning shows, including some in the urban format. Charlamagne has carved out a niche that is exclusively his, in the way that Imus did at WFAN. The smart thing Charlamagne does is immediately post his material online and get social media talking about it. The people will be your best publicity. Radio people need to learn from him. Build a fan base, use the fan base to create your own buzz, and keep delivering to them.

The internet is bigger than any radio station. It's the world wide web. His power doesn't come from the number of radio stations he has. It comes from what he says and how he markets that conversation beyond the radio stations.

That's exactly right. One listener can start a viral tweet.

Im confused. The show is on comedy central aired I think once a week but which radio stations carry the show? And if the show isn't carried on any radio stations perhaps the post should be edited to clarify that?

He has a daily syndicated morning show carried the bit as well as the TV show, per what I have read. Charlamagne's principal focus is the daily morning show, but he extends its reach via TV, streams and podcasts. But a person with a daily morning show and streams is principally a radio talent who, like Stern years ago, got some TV exposure.
