RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

RadioShack - a dying and nostalgic American brand - is trying to keep itself alive by shedding an association with another something that's dying, old and nostalgic: radio. RadioShack plans to begin informally referring to itself as "The Shack", dropping the word "radio" which a new generation of American consumers associate with poop.

PC World reports:

As much as I love the medium and as good as it's been to me, this one fact alone is more depressing than any of the endless on-line proclamations that radio is dying. Amazing and sad.

I guess we should call it, CellShack. Ever since the dam cell phone sales tookoff .they did not care about the other products they sell. anyway their prices wrer always were to high.It must be the new mangement that took over years ago and ruined a good store.
back in the 60s to the 80s i used to love going to RadioShack, Now I cant stand going there.

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

Radio Shack USED to be the place you could find any radio part or accessory you ever needed. Last time I was in one, I saw nothing but cell phones and electronic gadgets, PDAs, some computers and computer items. But ABSOLUTELY NO RADIOS. WHATSOEVER. ZIP. NADA.

Curious, I asked the salesperson where the radios were. She said they were a "catalog" item now. I then asked her what I came there for; a replacement FM antenna for an old ghetto blaster. She said they no longer carried those.....

So I wandered about this radioless Radio Shack, looking at the mess of CD cleaners, headphones, CD wallets, the few indoor TV antennas (all of questionable quality with ridiculously high prices) and the few dusty blank cassettes. And finally lo and behold, just a few inches away from the blank cassettes in the very back of the retail end of the store, under a layer of dust, laid the damnedest sight ever in 2003:

Blank 8-Track cartridge tapes.

And blank reel to reel tape, splicing tape and grease pencils. In the digital world even.

It was about this time I had COMPLETELY given up on Radio Shack for ANYTHING useful. Even by the close of the '80s, they were expensive, often had incompetent sales/management staff, similarly incompetent products (CASSETTE SPLICERS??) and radios that were reconstituted from models of other manufacturers deleted the previous year (namely GE, Emerson and RCA.) - only with cheaper components and a heftier price tag than the originals. Radio Shack once had a lot of quality to their name. Now it's basically a place to get expensive battery powered TOYS they wouldn't even sell in dollar stores.

Now they're becoming "The Shack" This may not sit well countless other independent espresso stands, pubs, teriyaki joints and strip bars also called "The Shack". But beyond that, it's actually that they, like many people, have simply lost the nostalgic value of radio. A value that only reappears when the electricity to everything else is gone. (Or when you need a replacement antenna and Radio Shack was the only known electronic supply store in town for MILES.....)

The legacy that was once Radio Shack's now belongs to C. Crane, whom fortunately still know a RADIO when they see one. And business is good down there I hear. I'm also lucky to be near some insanely expensive, but resourceful indie electronics supply stores. Who have reaped the whirlwind of Radio Shack's demise with the same orgasmic joy a radio programmer feels when he/she slays their most behemoth competitor with almost no effort whatsoever on their part....

"The Shack" is a fitting name though for an electronics store of the former Radio Shack's calibre today.....as it's mostly miscellaneous electronic flotsam and jetsam sold there now, not RADIOS......

The legacy of that nostalgic old medium, radio, probably does belong in the custodianship of a small, online, niche retailer who advertises on Coast to Coast AM. That's all the relevance that terrestrial radio has anymore, anyway. It's a curio for hobbyists.

Yes Kylie, but it's also a "hobby" that still has SOME life in it.....if only it can BREATHE.....

Yes and when KFC changed their name I never again ate fried chicken!!!

ahem, to sum it up KB...you wish.

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

Just curious, Kylie, why you come on a board NAMED for radio ... and trash the industry ... then wonder why people are annoyed? Kind of like going to someone's home for a cocktail party ... taking a whiz on their couch, and feigning surprise when the host tells you to GO HOME. If you have something insightful or interesting to offer ... let's hear it. Otherwise, if your contribution is going to continue to be "radio is dead and you're all losers" ... I'll be more than happy to buy the first book so you can start a NEW hobby.

thanks.

Bad analogy! Let me try my hand:

Kind of like being a doctor, going into a patient's room and telling them they only have a few months to live, then becoming surprised when they spend their life savings on a 2-week time share condo.

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

Now it's better off to go to Wal-Mart. they have a broad selection on all electronics. and half price too.I think the New The Shack will die soon,I very suprize they are still around.I do better at the local fleamarkets and Ham fests for old electronic parts and equipment.Even if I mention the name Radio Skack at them ,they will LOL at me.

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

An industry where you need to scrounge flea markets to get spare parts? Sounds like it has a bright future ahead of it! LMAO!

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

I think they have already done this ... but any chance they would specialize what is in retail stores and keep their "deep" catalog of esoteric stuff for online order w/ in-store pickup (ship-to-store)? I still go there to try to find things and am surprised when they actually HAVE a solution (though they struck out on anything that WORKS when it comes to recording phone line...!!)

And when did Tandy unload them??

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

LittleBoyBlue - I think you're overreacting. IMO, Kylie made it clear the posts and opinmions involve terrestrial radio. There are a lot of broadcast outlets that are NBOT terrestrial. Besides - I hadn't heard the news about "Shack" and I'm glad it was posted.

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

This is more of a commentary on the traction of online merchants and eBay than "dying tech". As has been said, Radio Shack long ago quit having any depth of inventory in their retail stores. It became pretty much the place to get batteries and patch cords.

I usually have to go to Fry's if I need something right away...otherwise I'm buying everything via eBay. Just scored a 50-foot S-Video cord there, even with shipping (which offsets local sales tax) was cheaper than Fry's and I didn't have to drive 40 miles round trip either.

In fact, eBay is becoming the go-to place for all kinds of widgets and doo-dads (the technical term) not only for radio and electronics, but all kinds of things. It's easy for an enterprise to work out of their garage with deep vertical inventory and service their niche via eBay then to set up a storefront catering to local trade.

Can't put the genie back in the bottle! Even C.Crane realizes that on their website and catalogs. Specialize in one thing and you can be a more viable business, than stocking thousands of items like "The Shack".

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

Dan - good observations. And it's MY turn to admit I may have overreacted. After thinking and reading, I'm pretty much convinced dropping "Radio" from the name had little to do withe the actual business of radio and more with the fact that Radio Shack has had little to do with actually selling radios for many years.

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

The only thing I ever go to "The Shack" for these days is patch cords. If I want to buy a radio, I search the local Goodwill's and Value Village's.

Re: RadioShack drops the "Radio" in its name - wants to keep away from dying tech

Yep. Last time I was there, there was a million cell phones, headphones, RC toys, and all this "accessory" junk. Only radios were SW radios or "satellite radio".
