Ratings are out, Ft Walton/Pensacola (Big surprise on #1) updated!

Jawbreaker, Minor Threat, Sunny Day Real Estate, Dag Nasty... trust me, The Blaze isn't playing any of these bands or anything like these bands Wikipedia uses to define "Emo".

Sub-generas of rock music are very difficult to define as all the good rock bands mix em up. The Blaze is simply a hard leaning Active rocker. The punk rock and indie bands that fall into the "Emo" category are only played on student run College stations. Those bands just simply aren't that popular.

The Blaze will fail, we don't need THREE active rockers in this area, we are already saturated enough. We have too many country, CHR and active rockers, people still enjoy 99 rock and it's no surprise 102.1 had better numbers. The "we play everything" seems to be doing well.

The only reason why WHWY is #1, well, look how powerful it is.

105.5 barely comes in out here in the sticks.

The biggest problem with the Wave is they spend way too much time telling me they "play everything". Random, pre-recorded, yap, yap, yap... between every single song. At least Wolfy and Kevin McKay say different stuff, talk to people crazy enough to still be calling a radio station request line, and tell me a little about the news between songs on 99 Rock.

Rob, I think you need to understand demographics. Country is well served down here. We only have two CHR's, which is normal to say the least, as for any market. However, Hit Music Now is just "there", no one really pays attention to it anymore hoping it will jump to a 2.1 to a 4.0 in the next several books. I do not think Clear Channel cares because if they did, they would compete with WABD in a more legitimate manner. WABD has that "hometown" feel that WABB used to have. That's why it caters to more listeners on the Mobile/P'cola Gulf Coast. Just imagine if WABD never existed? You would see HMN have much higher ratings than it does and probably it would have acquired some of the former WABB DJs. But Matt McCoy is trying but can do so much because Clear Channel doesn't really care. So I do think HMN won't last that long. I think if they were to flip, they would replaced with a cheaper type format, such as Adult Hits (Jack-FM) where little money goes into it.

Let me know what you think though.

I just want to see a little more variety here across the dial, an Oldies station, ESPN radio (I like Mike & Mike) and that's it.

WCOA should be just simulcasting their AM, there not. we have three CHR's in Pensacola, ZZZZZ 96, ABD and HMN. (despite Z is licensed to FWB)

One thing I have noticed is that ESPN is starting to come in more than PCB, any chance they can get a power increase to say 5K? Even moving up to 107.3 and putting HMN to bed would be a good spot. I think they carry the Jags (could I be that lucky?) I'm not a Saints fan by far. Being from Ohio, we have the worst team but one day, we will be victorious. 107.3 ESPN Radio would be a good outlet for high school sports, at least in Pensacola. The attempt to put High School Sports on 1.260 for Ft Walton Beach is futile because of their flea power at night.

Can 107.3 become ESPN? Is that owned by Clear Channel? I think having a full powered (a mono 50KW signal goes far) would be great. The Ticket craps out in Gulf Breeze and I'm not sure about Hales Pensacola translators.

-Rob

I was unaware that any USA sports were carried on the radio. Why would CC be carrying the Jags on 107.3? I'd assume they would be a better fit on that little 105.5 sports station in Mobile. Are they just carrying football or basketball too?

Are any local radio stations planning to carry the Troy Trojans football games this year?

Hale's lil network is carrying all sports, not sure about these other stations.

I don't know about that, yea, carrying the Jags, maybe I can catch a glimpse of XL during a night game before they go directional. I think here it's mostly New Orleans. At least we got AAZ carrying the Braves (which has done really well for that little 100KW station)

Their new sound isn't as warm as their old sound. If they modernized, how come no stereo?

I'm confused. This thread made a wrong turn somewhere near Albuquerque. Anyone got a map?

Poledo, Hi. I am a new user of Radio-Info/Discussions - so pardon me for causing some of the confusion. I am from the Mobile/P'cola market. Simply, Rob 42 wants a sports station to replace the current 107.3 format; so that's where and what we have been talking about. I don't think having another Sports talker would be necessary but Rob thinks otherwise.

Hmmm. Where to start?

Sports geography? The Jags are the Jacksonville Jaguars--a North Florida team, thus perhaps some following in Northwest Florida? But probably not so much in SW Alabama. Thus, perhaps some rationale for carriage on a Florida station (107.3)... but maybe not on WNSP? Just guessing here, y'all.

No idea what the future holds for WHMN. Nobody does. Even them. Would it make a good lightning rod?

Mark, I'm not quite as surprised as you are about WCOA-FM's lack of impact. Cumulus is kind of treating it as a tagalong to 1370. Per their shared website... a simulcast of the AM's morning act--but only until 8 (?)... then B-List talent from the right-wing network roster, bucking heads with the A-List Unholy Trinity (Beck/Rush/Hannity) on 1370.

What's their pitch? "Worse Programming, But In Stereo?"

Alex, hang around awhile. Eventually none of us will have any idea what we're commenting on. That's how we roll.

Redneck, how accurate could these ratings be for WCOA? I feel sure WCOA AM still has quite a following... how is Arbitron dividing up the ratings between the AM and FM. How many people surveyed are smart enough to make it clear weather they were listing to WCOA AM or WCOA FM? Using the same call letters for the AM and FM with different programming seems stupid here, but since the AM has been WCOA since the Yankees took over in 1865 they can't really change the call letters even if they want to use the "heritage" for the FM.

I think WCOA AM's lineup could rise to the top in Pensacola (or Escambia/Santa Rosa/Baldwin counties) on an FM signal... right along side WXBM and WBLX. Redneck, Tibbs what do you experts think?

Is it possible that moving WCOA AM to 106.1 and moving Magic to 100.7 could actually produce more total listeners to Cumulus radio? It seems stupid as hell to put WRRX and WDLT on 100kw signals on the same tower but 100.7 hasn't performed for Cumulus... ever, so why not give it a try?

We need something to replace all the 1,000 translators in the area.

I still see the death of HMN coming soon, surprised it hasn't happened yet. Is Clear Channel really desperate? They need to put it to rest.

We have only one sports station, the ticket, which used to cover Pensacola and even Mobile but no more. Their weak 100.3 puts their station to shame. Even being on 93.5 in Panama City doesn't do it justice (Do they cover Panama City sports???)

107.3 is a Pensacola station, who cares about Mobile, they need to stay local, that's what Hale did.

Either that or bring back My 107.3. I really liked that station

Hey Rob,

I've been in contact with the guy that runs PD at the station (HMN) and he sounds encouraged about the future. It sounds like their is no imminent death in store for the station.  I've told him and gave him my suggestions for the station and he "agreed" with everything I mentioned to him.  Who knows, maybe he doesn't know something that could possibly happen in the future but if I was CC, I would keep CHR and rebrand it. It's safe to say that he, Matt McCoy along with Elvis Duran and Reid will be sticking around.. If they get a couple more voice tracked dj's from Birmingham that would be fine. But not from Texas or California. Unlike you, in the most cordial manner, I want 107.3 HMN to succeed :). We do not need any more Talk stations. 100.7 and 106.5 will do.

But yet again, what do I know?!

That's good news, I don't get 106.5 here, so there's only 1 talk station.

The HMN branding IS getting boring though.

-Rob

Cumulus hasn't been paying the bills over at WABD very long. Assuming WABD continues to dominate the Pensacola market and crushes 107.3, what music format holes exists for 107.3? All I can think of are niche formats as CC wouldn't do Classic Hits and compete with their own successful Classic Rocket Rocker.

I've posted this before like a broken record. 107.3 has the worst signal of all the 100kw Baldwin county stations... flipping the station to a mono talk format makes more sense than putting a niche format on that signal. I'm assuming 107.3 produces the leasts amount of revenue of all the Mobile/Pensacola CC properties. I doubt any urban format would bring more revenue than HMN.

Tibbs.....we have a gold opportunity here to "educate" the newcomer Alex about Rob.....you gonna let it slide?

Welcome to board Alex

If Alex can't figure it out for himself we don't need him around these parts.
