Ratings: Tony Awards Crash to New Low Versus Soaring NBA Finals

Speaking of the NBA Finals, I don't know how or why, but I've always believed that the NBA Championship is fixed/has a pre-determined. It really doesn't make any sense and something this big would've gotten out by now. But in the last 34 years, only 11 teams have won the title. And of those 11 teams, only the Dallas Mavericks won once. This year will be a new team added to the total.

Then there was the small matter of 21 (or was it 20?) consecutive Game 7s going to the home team. The streak ended a few years ago, maybe because the NBA itself thought it was getting hard to believe and ordered its sham referees to see to it that the road team won a decider.

Les Moonves Confirms CBS Commitment to TONY Broadcast: 'It's Part of Our Heritage'

In a new interview with the New York Post's Michael Riedel, CBS chief Les Moonves confirms his network's commitment to airing the annual TONY AWARD ceremony. "CBS and Broadway have been tied together for years," Moonves tells Riedel. "I think of the TONY AWARDS as part of our heritage. The show is a money-loser for CBS, but there are certain things that are more important than making money. I know this sounds corny, but part of being a broadcaster is public trust. And I believe it is important for us to show America what is happening on Broadway."

This year's Tonys won't have NBA competition, but they would go up against Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final (should it go that far).

The game hadn't even been played. I looked for Kimmel on my TiVo and he wasn't there. Then I discovered Kimmel was to air that night. And that's when I read this. Several games hadn't been played when this was posted.

Anyway, unless people just wanted to see "Hamilton" win over and over (I only saw them lose one, except for categories where they had multiple nominees and couldn't have avoided it except in the event of a tie), I guess there wasn't much reason to watch. The Carpool Karaoke was quite good with all those talented singers, and Corden had quite a good musical performance himself.

Not as much as I would like that I would call "music" but the "School of Rock" kids were fun. And "Hamilton" was more enjoyable than I thought it would be.

I really wish they'd show us clips of the plays with audio.

'Hamilton' drives Tony Awards telecast to its best ratings in 15 years

Broadway’s acclaimed smash “Hamilton” pushed the ratings for the annual Tony Awards telecast on Sunday to its highest level in 15 years.

The ceremony from the Beacon Theatre that aired from 8 to 11:15 p.m. averaged 8.73 million viewers, an increase of 35% over the 2015 ceremony.

Next time, wait for the actual ratings.

I thought ratings for this year's Tonys would take a hit due to the aftermath of the Orlando massacre.

Even nobody gave a hoot about Pittsburgh winning the Stanley Cup, out of respect for those killed.

As terrible as the shootings in Orlando were, why should the networks constantly move their premiere events due to society's failings? Neither the Tony awards nor the NHL Finals have anything to do with the events in Orlando.

And.....there were a ton of people who did give a hoot about the Stanley Cup but they were not located in one of the major media centers.

Don't forget that the people killed in Orlando were gay, and the LGBT demographic has been a big player in theater for some time. I'm sure the shootings had an especially deep impact among the Tonys crowd -- performers, presenters and audience -- and that could have contributed to the spike in ratings just as much as the success of "Hamilton" did, if not more.

Actually, an old thread was used. I know, it's confusing.

And imagine my surprise to see Kimmel on my TiVo last night. I thought NBA games always aired on Sunday, and I concluded that the Warriors swept Cleveland.
