It's a cycle thats been going on for years from the 50's through now. Every decade there is a new sound. Sadly if your in late 20's or up in your 30's now your not gonna like the music today. Everyone goes through it. It's apart of life. Only thing you can do is adjust to the times. KPWR is fine where it is and it fits Los Angeles
Trust me wdb2003 I know what you're talking about. I'm not in my 20's or 30's but I know great music is. BTW bro You're 25 and I'm surprised that you like the same music as me. There is nothing else to say about these radio station tweaks or flips so what's done is done right bro? :) You're right, I am broadcasting my interest in music.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

Yes sad as it is. What you hear on these stations that are owned by major companies is meaningless to the big suites. All about their pockets and making a profit. They gotta feed employees. I was born in the 80's but Im a 90's kid and music was good. Even pop music despite the boy bands. But there's a new sound every 10 years. When you get older your music taste will change too.

Well so far, this still hasn't happened to me. I'm wondering if I'll still be listening to booty bass and electro-freestyle when I'm 50? I notice most of the people I've grown up with who used to produce / sing over / dj with that particular style have all seemingly "abandoned" that sound and haven't even taken advantage of the new dance trend . Not sure if that means they weren't true fans of the music like they claimed to be, or if I'm just a "slow changer". I don't think they have to all sound or produce exactly the same way they used to in the 90's, but they could create modernized versions of that sound instead of just vanishing or trying to straight up change their style to imitate the modern autotune pop dance stuff that they aren't as good at! After all, new producers have come in to modernize bass, freestyle, and even house, so why can't the originators of the 90's version of that sound (who are all still young enough to do it, by the way) take advantage of the trend now that the sound has come back? These were the same people who were trying to keep the sound alive in 2003 and 2004 while hip hop was taking over, but now that it's their chance again, they are all gone! (Well not "gone" per se - I do see them on facebook..).

This would be an example of modernized bass & freestyle:

I know this for a fact. BTW I understand what you are trying to tell me and you are very lucky to be a 90's kid. Urban was the pop sound of the 1990's and early 2000's. 10 years from now what will we have though. There is nothing else to talk about. Those format tweaks and flips have already been discussed and case closed the only thing is to reflect on the good old days of L.A. Rhythmic, Urban Contemporary and Urban AC radio. After all the stuff I've posted on this board you(wdb2003) get the picture now right bro. ;) It's great to reminisce about what these radio stations were like in the 90's but we do have to get with the times. Like Mya said in 1998 I'm Movin' On.LOL :D

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

I actually got the picture back in 2003 when I started college. Even being in the midwest during that time I would make visits to LA to see family and monitor the stations here compared to KC. I notice these changes listening online and posting on this borad for years.

Well exactly what changes are talking about? Power 106 was heavy on the Hip Hop & R&B as well as The Beat and KJLH was a true Urban AC station in 2001-03 while you were in Kansas City so what are you talking about. Those station did not change their sound until 2005-06. KJLH started playing hip hop in October 2005, Power 106 goes back to the rhythmic panel in January 2005 and The Beat flips to Urban Adult Contemporary in May 2006. You told me that as get I older, I'll get a better understanding about the radio industry so you're right.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

Im talking about the demographic changes in Los Angeles compared to other markets. When I lived in Los Angeles in the 90's it was different. I was just saying when I started college in the fall of 2003 I took classes in radio and television as electives and learned alot on how radio compaines market their stations depending on the city. When I was your age I use to wonder why other markets have better stations than other markets. And why certain songs are not being played. I know the year of the changes in Los Angeles radio. I would visit family sometimes and those stations had streaming on the web during that time so I would listen back home and monitor their changes thats all.

I know what you are talking about. Around mid to late 2005 those stations(KJLH, Power 106 and The Beat) changed their musical pattern because of L.A.'s large hispanic population. In the 90's up to 2002 we've had a large black population. I expect New York to have two focused R&B/Hip Hop stations (Power 105.1 & Hot 97) because they have a large black population and NY is the birth place of hip hop. Sorry to get off topic. These L.A. Rhythmics and Urban AC's aren't unfocused it's just that because L.A.'s progessive black population is shedding.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

It looks like KPWR has decided to add the number one single on BDS' Rhythmic Top 40 chart (as of this posting).... Katy Perry's "E.T."

They've been playing it for a while. BTW Urban WPHI 100.3 The Beat in Philly has been playing it also. I don't get that song at all. ???

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

I must admit, that song does sound much more urban than "Hey ya" by Outkast.

The only thing urban about Katy Perry's E.T. is that Kanye West is a featured artist.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

Also California Girls because of Snoop. Only Urban station I recall playing it was KPRS. It was in rotation last year for a few weeks.

I don't know any Mainstream Urbans that will play Katy Perry's hits. The station that had Katy Perry's California Gurls in heavy rotation here in Los Angeles was KIIS-FM as for Power 106 I'm not sure because Katy Perry are primarily sent to CHR/Mainstream Top 40 stations.

KPWR never played California Gurls or her two other hits from the album, but I think playing "E.T." makes sense. Not only is it the rhythmic #1, but it sounds fine with the other songs in rotation. Personally, I think they should get a little more adventurous and play the Benny Benassi remix, but that doesn't feature Kanye West.

I've also heard Power play Chris Brown "Beautiful People", a song produced by Benassi, that is a very straightforward dance hit- so it should be interesting to see if they continue to play this song, as it could signify an even greater shift away from just hip hop.

"E.T." is certainly not Rythemic at all, I liked it at first since I like Kanye West, but that song was overplayed and I can't stand it now. I wish they would play "Look at me now" w/ Chris Brown and Lil' Wayne more

Agreed. I like Chris Brown's Look At Me Now. IMO it sounds better than all the other records played on KPWR.

Same here I cant think of any either. KPRS played the song to attract white listeners after the ratings convert over to PPM last year for Kansas City. KPRS took a dive and CHR KMXV was pulling in decent ratings. Also Rhythmic KCHZ flipped back to CHR again and was pulling in higher numbers. KPRS started adding Rhyhmic artist to the station but since then its back to Urban Contempary. Katy Perry is okay for Rhythmic but not Urban.

I agree with you wdb2003. IMO Her record belong on KIIS FM and AMP Radio but not Power 106 because the Power Playlist is mostly filled with Hip Hop & R&B records.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

justpassingthough,

I believe Power 106 did play California Gurls. It probably was not in heavy rotation, however I remember them playing it when it first came out.
