justpassingthough,

I believe Power 106 did play California Gurls. It probably was not in heavy rotation, however I remember them playing it when it first came out.

Brian
I don't

They actually did when it first came out. Not in rotation but only in the mix.

It's never too late to play a record on Power 106. I can understand them playing Katy Perry's California Gurls during a mix show but not in their regular rotation though. IMO they can play some throwbacks during mix show but I don't expect them to play it over and over again but let's get back to Katy Perry. Now Power 106 played California Gurls probably because of Snoop Dogg's rap bridge and because Snoop Dogg is Power 106's core artists. Judging by the Power playlist I doubt that they'll ever play Katy Perry in rotation with the Hip Hop & R&B records by Rick Ross, 50 Cent, Lupe Fiasco, Usher, etc. Power 106 plays alot hits on the Billboard Hot R&B Charts.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

2011 has thus far been a better year for hip-hop than 2010, which was downright dismal. Of course its not 2002-2006 again but there has been some decent stuff this year. 2010 was a bad year for urban stations because there just wasn't a lot of songs to even play let alone urban hits.

Electro fads in the US have never lasted more than a few years. Lady Gaga, while still overwhelmingly popular, is not as much as she was back in the Poker Face days. Today, her main audience seems to be the gay community. I think by 2013 the current electro fad with artists like Ke$ha and Gaga will be on its way out and some other fad will be in. Hip-hop, like rock and jazz before it, will always have its place.

That's true because around this time last year alot of urban stations were spinning alot of Electro R&B/Hip Hop hits. Urban AC KJLH started playing Usher's OMG, B.O.B.'s Nothin On You and Black Eyed Peas Imma Be whilst driving away loyal long time listeners. 2010 wasn't the best year in radio. IMO Power 106 is sounding more like an R&B/Hip Hop station these days.

Power also played I Kissed A Girl when it first came out during the midday on Yesi Ortiz show but a different verison. They also played Just Dance and Pokerface heavily when they first came out. As of now none of GaGa's new hits are on the playlist. I like her first album but now shes just overrated

Yeah I remember Power 106 playing Lady Gaga's Poker Face in heavy rotation. I swear Gaga's hits were getting 24/7 spins on Power 106 just to compete with KIIS-FM. BTW The reason why they are not playing Lady Gaga is because KIIS-FM isn't playing R&B/Hip Hop anymore. Now Gaga is on KIIS-FM where she belongs bro. ::) Power 106 played "Born This Way" for a while when it first came out in February a day after the Grammy Award during "Big Boy in the morning" and that was the last time I've heard it on the station.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

That really has nothing to due with them not spinning her new records. KIIS just keeps up with the times as the top rated CHR in the country. You hardly hear Hip Hip and R&B on any CHR stations in the US now or days. None of GaGa's new hits are apealing to Rythmic radio now. They prommoted Born This Way as her biggest hit and its overrated and rip off of Madonna Express Yourself.

I'm glad that KPWR is not spinning Gaga anymore. They're better of spinning R&B/Hip Hop IMO eventhough they're selective of their R&B records Power 106 was a top rated station ten years ago(2001) A top rated station now(2011). Ten years from now(2021) KPWR still be on top.

Re: Power 106 sounds more like a CHR/Pop than a Hip Hop station

Side Note: Remember Shade Sheist's Wake Up & Money Owners. I remember Power 106 playing those hits in heavy rotation more than any other urban station in the U.S. according to an L.A. Times Article from 2002. Jimmy Steal whom was the PD of Power 106 at the time stated that he added Shade Sheist to the Power Playlist because "Money Owners" and "Wake Up" made a good impression with the 12-34 teens & young adults target demos. Power 106 started playing "Money Owners" the last week of April 2002. Rival Hip Hop station KKBT played those songs as well. The Second single "Wake Up" Featuring Nate Dogg was added to the Power Playlist the week of Sept 24, 2002. BTW guess how many spins Power 106 gave "Money Owners" in it's first week 380 spins. During that time the songs that found the Power 106 playlist was Khia's My Neck, My Back, Ludacris Move B, P.Diddy's I Need A Girl, Emeniem's Without Me, Cam'ron's Hey Ma & Oh Boy, Nelly's Dellema, Ashanti's Foolish and Lil' Wayne's Way Of Life.
