Really Crummey Story in the New York Times ...

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/28/us/28host.html?ex=1175745600&en=e57ad1759f71dda6&ei=5070

That's gonna leave a mark. How long till the Republic picks it up?

LOS ANGELES, March 27 — When people hear the radio host Joe Crummey on Phoenix’s popular KFYI murmur sarcastically, “We don’t have enough human rights activists in this town,” they know he means Phoenix.

Ditto for when he offers to assess the “east side west side traffic right now.”

As it turns out, Mr. Crummey, whose favorite talk show topics include immigration, patriotism and Arizona politics, is indeed reporting for duty in the valley. Just not in the Phoenix Valley.

Rather, it is here, in the San Fernando Valley, where he works via the Internet from his home on the top of a hill in the Studio City section of Los Angeles. Listeners in Phoenix are none the wiser.

Armed with four computers, a digital recorder, a constant stream of Fox News and a professional microphone, Mr. Crummey holds court for three hours each weekday during Phoenix’s drive-home time slot — from about 400 miles away in a neighboring state.

“I admit that it is obvious that listeners infer that I’m there,” Mr. Crummey, whose pitch signals talk-radio host at “hello,” said during a tour of his home broadcasting operation. “Most people don’t know I am not. But I’m just on the radio talking about their town, and I guess they can take it or leave it.”

Wow, they really broke the story!

Next week, an expose about Liberace, guess what? He was gay!

(Though I do love it when we are an hour behind LA and Joe gets the time wrong)

Clear Channel, disingenuous??
NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1, Is there no news or radio in New York? #2 Who cares? #3 Who would know, other than insiders? He sounds local. #4 It's not like KFYI or Cheap Channel are the only ones doing this.

"Who cares?"

Obviously, you care.

And one of the two following facts must be true about Crummey's audience.

(a) they don't mind being lied to.

(b) they are too stupid to care.

"Radio is largely a theater of the mind" says the KFYI producer.

In other words, "we don't have to be accurate or forthcoming with our audience."

Interesting how little regard Clear Channel has for its dittohead clone listeners.

You mean, Joe Crummey doesn't broadcast his show from Phoenix???

Frankly, I'm shocked and appalled!!

What next? Rush doesn't broadcast from high atop the EIB building in NYC??

Be careful, I might shed a tear or two. :'(

Crummey not doing his show at the CCU Complex on Van Buren??

Hmmmm...maybe I should ask Nurse Jeff to see his degree? On second thought, better not...he may ask to see mine!

Is It Raining Where Joe Crummey is?

Is it true too that when a song is played on the radio that the band ISN'T really in the studio playing live and in-person? ???

I want the government to step in and mandate disclaimers to run during every break that identify the host/DJ's location!!!

KTAR PD takes off the gloves.

More like "KTAR PD gets his secret underwear in a knot about something he shouldn't give a flying you-know-what about." ;D

KTAR PD says "Stop lying to the audience"

Yeah, and TAR never lies when they say that McBland has a good, interesting show (BTW, its "ask the doctor" day on

When TAR can get someone at Crummey's time slot that actually gets listeners (rather than "rehash with Dead and Heidi"

Geez, now Aunt Carlos will see this article and will want to move back to Dallas and we will get 3 more weeks of him talking about how to buy a house. ::)

about time! i think ktar is brilliant for playing this up. it's about time kfyi got busted for what they're doing. ktar has everything to gain. i heard the pd on ankarrlo today talking about this. finally some balls.

Nice to see that TMISU have their priorities straight. ::)

Tis obviously better to trash the competition for having the unmitigated gall to have one of their hosts do a show from out of town, while they themselves refuse to face reality and dump Captain Stupor & Paul Harvey. Then at the same time lying about not carrying sports on their news-talk station.

Bottom line: KTAR has to worry about KTAR. Why should they give a **** about KFYI? If what they're doing is wrong and their audience leaves as a result, then KFYI will stew in their own **** and KTAR will reap the benefits. Trashing the competition while doing little to improve their own lot is not only just whining, it's extremely unprofessional.

It's been said (by myself and many others on this board) that it is very odd to hear Joe Crummey talking about local issues when he's not local. It's disingenuous, somewhat insulting to the audience and let's be honest, a real indictment to the lack of talk talent in this market when we have to get a sub par host from out of town to do a show. All of that having been said, it comes across as sour grapes to hear Russ Hill (the PD at Snewz 92.3) to be so caught up in this issue.

Others have said it in this thread, and I must agree--maybe if Russ would concentrate more on KTAR and less on what other stations are doing or not doing, perhaps Snewz 92.3 KTAR wouldn't be eating KFYI's dust. Perhaps Mr. Hill and TMISU are just upset that an out of towner is chewing up the "afternoon news" with Dead and Heidi in the latest trends. Bitter, party of one.

KTAR is live and local--aside from the ABC news breaks and Paul Harvey. However, the live, local talent is mediocre at best. Remember, quality always supersedes
quantity.

1. It's a story because of the questionable ethics for KFYI to promote Crummey show as if it were a Valley show. That's disingenious and a disservice to the Phoenix listening audience - and it's relevant because a national newspaper ran the story.

2. It's not a well kept secret -- Montini and others have revealed the "great secret" to the pubilc"... ...though I bet most KFYI listeners were not aware of this ethics lapse...

3. But then considering that it's on a station that airs misanthropic racist hate mongers spouting eliminationist rhetoric and other vulgar rantings (stating that young girls helping the homeless deserve to be raped, or telling callers to take the bone out of their nose…), it's probably a NIT…

And, KFYI's talent is better? Pass the joint after you finish inhaling.

I can't believe Hill is attacking the competition. It's about time someone over at KTAR start swinging. I love the attitude. They've been spineless way too long. Rock on. This is going to get good.

Did you notice this line in the PDISU's blog--

"Even though 550am has far fewer listeners than KTAR-FM..."

What extrap is that--Edna and the 75+ crowd in Sun City?

Russ, I think your statement is bass-ackwards. And where
did you get the "A" in KT'R? ;D

Rubbish, pure and simple.

Face it, you just hate anyone that isn't as far to the left as you.

Broken record....

From Hill's Blog:

According to Arbitron KTAR has approximately 425,000 listeners. Our nearest news/talk competitor is 550AM with 215,000 listeners. These are the latest numbers from the Fall Arbitron Book 12+. In the key A25-54 demo, KTAR has approximately 50,000 more listeners than any other news/talk competitor.

Will Russ explain how his numbers indicate a complete opposite of the fall book
12+ as published on radioandrecords.com? The R&R chart has 55/FYI topping
KT'R by almost...well, we can't go into actual number here but you can check
them on the R&R site.
