Red Sox hold tryouts for PA announcer at Fenway Park

I saw this on the pre-game on tonight's Sox game.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2012/05/red_sox_to_have.html

“What we’re looking for is a rising star,” Lucchino said. “We’re trying to find someone to fill a very big hole in the operation at Fenway Park. We lost Carl Beane tragically a few weeks ago and we’re trying to replace the voice of Fenway Park."

Anyone here trying out? Sounds great and especially if it includes a parking spot.

Don't trust them. They should just bring in 4-5 professionals and pick the voice that best fits. No tryouts (and nobody from 'EEI).
I think they are looking to make some foolish changes and go more showbiz. Like everything else they've dreamed up for game presentation.

Lucchino is a snake. He's "looking for a rising star". This star can really only rise so far. A dead guy announces Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium. Lucchino is looking to turn this into some new gimmick. I have nothing against making money but don't p*** in my ear and tell me it's raining.

I seem to remember when Carl Beane got the job that it was reported that the pay was very low. The seat and the parking spot were worth more than the pay. Most night games end past 10:30. I assume that Meter must get up around 4:00 to do the D&C show. That would be pretty rough for not much reward.

I hope he was joking about the PA announcer calling balls & strikes. If the announcer mis-speaks, the ump, hitter, and catcher will all turn around and look up there. That will be really dumb.

A Ticket Taker at Fenway gets $75.00 bucks a night and they are done at 8:30pm. $150.00 is nice part time money. When Carl started he was making $50.00 a game I wouldn;t be surprised if the Red Sox were only offering the new guy less than what they were paying Carl.

Actually, Lobel would be a pretty good choice. It's certainly a familiar voice and I don't think it conflicts with anything else he's doing. I miss him as part of the Boston sports scene. He was just a likeable guy. He must be approaching 70, so a part time involvement might work for him.
