Reflecting on the good ol' days of Promo Only Rhythm Club Series

So, somehow I came to a point where I ended up searching for "24/7" (Dj Felony Bass Mix) by Liberty City, and came across the Promo Only 1999 Rhythm Club series, which brought back deep memories of how exciting the Rhythm Club series used to sound.

http://www.promoonly.com/view_issue_year.php?IssueTitleID=20&Year=1999

Flash forward to today and I can only wonder why did things change so much? All those fresh sounding freestyle, bass, and breakbeat remixes that used to be on Rhythm Club mysteriously disappeared, and it seems that it was even better in the mid 00's BEFORE the modernized version of the sound even came back! I mean, I'm not complaining too much because Ultimix and Funkymix seem to continuously put out at least a decent level of decent rhythmic remixes of that sort on a steady basis, but I can only wonder what happened to the Rhythm Club Series in Promo Only? It used to be the best place to find that sound, now that I look back, and I regret not having much knowledge about these promo services back during the good ol' days when things were TRULY good!

We need someone to do a modernized version of what Rhythm Club used to be with tracks like "let the bass kick", "birthday sex (remix)", "beautiful" by Akon...etc, and all those bass & dance remixes today's dj's are (professionally) producing, but in the extended fashion in which the Rhythm club Series used to deliver it back in the day! In other words, provide the nice, clean extended remix product WITHOUT adding too much unnecessary stuff or extra beats and sounds. Take a look at that track listing for all the 1999 series in the link I left above. You've got breakbeat, booty bass, freestyle, freestyle bass, house, amongst remixes by Cibola (!!!), Dj X, Dj Felony, Beat Digga, Planet Freestyle...etc. A modernized version of all those sounds have returned, yet due to the modernization of technology, it seems like nowadays you have to hit up a number of sites to find a bunch of different stuff, rather than finding most of it in one place these days.

So, does the modernization of technology make things easier, better, and more convenient for this whole (modernized) rhythmic dance / freestyle sound, or was it better back in the day when you had less options, but more of that sound available in one place? I guess it depends on how you look at it. Progression is always good, but in some ways I still I do miss the good ol' days, even though I didn't really officially learn, subscribe to, or learn about or get into the whole promo service stuff until 2004. To just be able to look at the track listings and hold the physical the cd and get that feeling of knowing you have that sound and how fresh it will be when you put it in the player still feels good sometimes. It is nice, however, knowing that many promo sites carrying the modernized bass & freestyle sound now have digital download service.

KDM, I think that the time you're referring to was during the tenure of Phil Michaels-Trueba (sp?) at Promo Only's dance series. As you may know, Promo only is based in Orlando, which was right down the road from WPYO 953-Party, where Michaels-Trueba was the station's PD. I think that's why you saw a lot of similarity between the breakbeat remixes/artists on Party and the promo only cds. I agree with you, it's a shame that breakbeats in general appears to have lost flavor within the dance community (somewhat ironic considering the mainstream crossover success of the breakbeat remix of Roc Project several years ago). We could get into a chicken and the egg discussion of whether it's because there's no product out there, or there's no product out there because there's no demand, but in any event a lot of the Florida dj's (e.g., DJ Infiniti) haven't produced anything in several years. There's also the loss of the breakbeat channel on XM, "Boombox". There is some stuff to be optimistic about, however, as some of the core dance artists have experimented with the sound (e.g., Ferry Corsten "It's Time"; Armin van Buuren "In and Out of Love") and DJ Icey continues a weekly show on XM.

Trueba is now at Cox Miami, working for the R&B station. He may or may not have a hand in 93 Rock's hd2 channel Party 93-1, although he did while it was a terrestrial and then an internet-only station. I'd be interested if anyone has any more information!

One thing I've noticed is that many of those sounds that disappeared are "back in business" today in mainstream radio and I'm wondering why the Rhythm Club series doesn't acknowledge that today. It may not be Cibola, Dj X, or any of the remixers from the late 90's, but we have new producers making modernized versions of that whole bass & freestyle sound, such as Dj Mike D, Diggz-N-Skillz (Dj Danny Diggz), Dj Richie Rich, Max Methods.. etc, along with remixes styles such as the "birthday sex" remix by Jeremih, and certain styles similar to Akon's "beautiful" and Jay Sean's "Down" that could be used on rhythm club. I also don't see why the promo only rhythm radio is so different from the rhythm club. It would be nice to have extended versions of all the material that the radio series has, especially nowadays when everything in popular clubs seems to somewhat evolve around the tight playlists of radio.

Another thing I don't understand about promo services in general is why it sometimes takes so long to get certain songs or find instrumentals? It took me "forever" to find a good extended mix of "meet me halfway" by Black Eyed Peas, not sure if there is an extended version of "eenie meenie" by Justin Bieber ft Iyaz available yet (and if so, for how long was it out?), and there have been quite a few tracks that have been played on radio and charting for quite a while before I'd actually see it available from a promo service. I was even shocked last night to discover a certain promo service who JUST NOW got around to "meet me halfway" on their most recent series! - YESTERDAY! It was on the same disc as "my chick bad" by Ludacris and "telephone" by Lady GaGa and Beyonce. As of now, I'm still waiting for "Alejandro" by Lady Gaga in extended form..

Trueba is still programming Party 93.1 on HD-2 there.
