Regent Evansville fires news staffers, contracts with News 25

http://jakesdtvblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/news-roundup-march-29-april-4.html

Despite the fact that the news staff was like 3 people, and that News 25 has significantly more resources, ... I just don't like to see radio stations firing their news staffs.

Although I'm thinking that Evansville still has more radio news staffs (WIKY, WEOA) than Indianapolis (WIBC -- anyone else?).

Some possible explanation on this: Bank of America says that Regent is in default, and, barring a renegotiation, could be facing a 200 million dollar bill at the end of the month.

The "we're live and local serving the community" folks at Regent did away with news in Owensboro a few months ago. It is outsource to WEHT.

Regent purchased Brill Media as it circled the drain. Seven years later Regent is doing the same.

First of all, PT, thanks for posting that! JDTVB is my blog, and I appreciate the word getting around. Been getting quite a few hits off of this, so my hat's off to you.

I think you're right about the Evansville radio news staffs; I think WIBC's is the only one still operating full-time in Indy. Last time I checked (which was some time ago), WTHR (the NBC TV station) was doing the news on the Cumulus stations (WFMS, et al).

If You consider Full time as Live and Local with out the assist of Tape from 5am till 8pm during the week and maybe part of the day on saturday but i know Sundays WIBC airs Taped Newscasts all day following ABC News at the top of the hour

And firing a handful of news people will really help pay the debt.....
The assumption being that there were similar cuts in the other Regent markets.

Sad. Regent is on life support. The only reason to stick around is to see how much your severance check will be.

Plus the city wants to build an arena where there recently moved facility sits. They might have to move back to 41 and Lincoln.

I think everyone is sort of in a holding pattern, trying to see what the O'Daniel family (D-Patrick Ford) does. If that property gets used for the arena, I THINK Regent's new downtown digs will be safe from the wreckin' ball.

Notice I didn't say it'd be safe from the bankruptcy court! In all honesty, is there much doubt that's where they're headed sooner or later???

A C&P story a week or two ago indicated that if the DPatrick Ford site is chosen for the arena, the Regent facility will become parking.

Still, firing a few people at each property/market still will only have an incremental impact.
