Regents put the Proposed KXBT sale on the August 22-23 on the Agenda

Ummmm....actually, state universities don't really have anything to do with that. That's why we have so-called "local control" in Texas. But your point is well made. UT should NOT be yanking off commercial stations, it should be investing in itself.

That is what appears to be happening here. Make no mistake about it, universities are businesses. This sure looks like a business decision. Spend some time listening to KUT, it is the most commercial, non-commercial radio station I’ve ever heard.

I wish oldies wasn’t going away, but maybe they will end up on 98.1

That would be something having Mainstream oldies on 98.1 something Clear Channel is all of a sudden interested in, after all they do have that AM station in Brownsville KVNS. Oldies on KVET HD-1 and Old School on HD-2. Lets go write the folks at Clear Channel about this suggestion!

Seems like this is the way it's going. Universities needing 2 signals, one for music, one for news/talk. But I don't see Bill Powers & Company cutting some kids' families any slack on tuition. Oh, heavens no. No, no, no, no, noooooo. One suggestion is to get universities to go for AM sticks. If AM is truly a dying band, they can get them for cheaper and redirect the rest of that money to educational purposes. No?

After seeing the major success story that is KVET FM, do you really want CC to have anything to do with a replacement for 98.9?

And as for UT acquiring multiple stations, it's all a testament to the fiasco and waste of money that is HD Radio. HD was supposed to eliminate the need for multiple signals.

HA!

Further proof of the aforementioned HD radio fiasco, as far as KUT is concerned: their HD signal (and accordingly, all subchannels) have been off the air for weeks, if not months. And if you drive past the new communications building on Dean Keeton, you'll see the KUT banners outside, which promote 90.5 FM and kut.org, but not the HD!

Also, KUT's RDS has been off the air for months, at least since April or May, and it seems no one could be bothered getting it up and running again. That shouldn't have anything to do with the HD...

And while we're on the topic of UT radio stations, KVRX has been broadcasting in mono for several weeks as well.

For what it's worth, here's what the KUT website has to say about the HD situation:

Stormy Weather and Our HD Radio Channels

It’s already August, but the July storms are still on our minds as we work to replace the HD equipment lost as a result of those storms. We’ve ordered replacement parts and are working to get our HD channels up and running as soon as we can.

In the meantime, you can stream KUT2′s news and information programming, and KUT3′s jazz programming online. Just launch the KUT Media Player above to hear all your favorite KUT programs.

I would like to publicly call on KUT at this time to abandon the HD format, as listenership is almost unmeasurable and the money spent on it could be much better used to support audio streaming and the overall mission of KUT, especially now that it appears that there will be a second FM outlet.

Clear Channel owns KVNS AM 1500 out in Brownsville, Texas. It is a oldies format, and it is doing quite well music wise, and possibly ratings wise even though they are on AM.

I listen to it when I am able to pick it up in San Antonio only downside is I have to listen near the garage to get a listenable signal. Better variety than KONO on the 60s, and 70s.

And they own an Oldies station in Corpus Christi.

HA!

And DTV was supposed to make Television better, yeah right I don't like artifacts, and chopping which a lot of those DTV stations do. No thanks, I would rather stream my television viewing!!!
I agree with you on that one. My HD radio is only used in the house hooked up via PC sound card for aircheck recording. Still recording 98.9 BTW! I lost about 2 songs because my computer turned off without warning :( Oh well, over 4 weeks of programming not bad! :D

Update on the regents' proposed action...

http://www.statesman.com/business/ut-regents-to-vote-this-week-on-deal-2438966.html

The $6 million purchase would be funded by $2 million in gift funds, according to a meeting agenda, and a $4 million loan that KUT-FM must repay, with interest, to the university over a period of 10 years using funds it receives from sponsorships and gifts.

If KUT-FM falls behind by more than four monthly payments to UT, the frequency will be put up for sale, documents indicate.

The KXBT-FM sale price works out to approximately $3.83 per person in the station's coverage area, according to UT. A comparable deal to acquire another Austin station in 2010 worked out to $3.87 per person, the university said.

Methinks KUT is going too far out on a limb on this one....

kxbt 98.9 has been sold to ut, becomes aaa kutx 98.9. i will be listening to my ipod, cd;s more.

what are they going to put on kut during the day? classical?

Nope Adult Album Crap. A KGSR first launched 93.3 2009-2011 clone.

I would rather it go Regional Mexican/Hip Hop than that along with a dozen of others.

I have several mp3 files of KXBT first 2 weeks at 256k, the 3rd week at 128k and the rest at 96k. Days worth, days worth, and I am still doing it until the bitter end!

How bad can Austin Radio get now?
