Regents put the Proposed KXBT sale on the August 22-23 on the Agenda

You guys do realize you can continue streaming True Oldies online, even after 98.9 goes to KUT? Search for True Oldies on iHeartRadio or http://player.streamtheworld.com/_players/citadel/?sid=8669&nid=2920.

Yeah - not helping!!! Over the air or satellite is still the most reliable in the car. Streaming racks up data charges unless you are grandfathered in. And some idiot usually calls on the phone - taking down the stream.

Why couldn't UT pick on some other format? What next - they going to take down KLBJ?!

When your not near a PC, or your phone does not have either app like mine, then I do listen to the radio in my truck. 98.9 was about the only station I listened to now.

They should of just picked up 98.1 instead of 98.9.

I can't wait to get back up there with my new Pioneer car radio. I think the old supertuner 3D must have been damaged with lightning or something. Perfect reception on Bob-FM 103.5 going up Fry road in West Houston yesterday. I think when I come up there, I'll have much better luck on 101.1. And the AM is much better, too, so 860 will probably boom in even in the North part of Austin. I know I have KVNS daytime now in West Houston, that didn't happen on the old Pioneer I replaced, not during the summer - so AM has been substantially improved. I wonder if KVNS will make it to Austin as well?

I am about 30 miles south of Austin, KVNS comes in OK at night.

I got my FM antenna going to towards San antonio -- Much better radio.

I went to the KXBT web site to see if they mentioned the sale and noticed they stopped tweeting about the time UT announced the purchase approval.

Yes, I especially like the emphasis that will be placed on the HD-2 channel:

The format of KUT-FM's 90.5 HD2 signal, currently home to many news and talk programs that will shift to the station's main frequency, will probably be reprogrammed, he said. However, that won't be an immediate priority.

I hope they yank it completely and save the bucks now going to iBiquity.

Back when I did college radio, the students did the airshifts. Bless the regents hearts, for insisting that there be 'internships'. How wonderful to provide experience for a career field that is shrinking by the minute. By the way, do college-age people even listen to radio any more?
And which emoticon should I use to denote sarcasm? ::) ::) ::)

NPR has pretty well taken care of that. They require, or required, at least 5 full-time staff members. That pretty well relegated students to support roles. Yeah, the student jobs are there, but they're not what they used to be!

Please join me in writing to the FCC it has to gain their approval before proceeding. More people that direct their criticism to the FCC the better!

UT is about to find out just how hard it is to put an all news format on the air. It is backbreaking work for a staff anything short of KRLD. There's a lot of debate and arguing over commas happening in NPR newsrooms and that won't cut it in an all news format in radio market 39. There's a lot less happening here than in market #5. They will probably have a lot of long-form interviews and news shows (no calls because calls are talk, not news) about green energy, cycling, music/arts, conservation and other subjects which are uniquely Austin and rely less on produced reporter content. All news is insatiably hungry and the audience sees right through it if you try to do it on the cheap like throwing the bird on for most of the hour. KUT will need to be a lot less picky in their story selection if they are to feed the beast 24/7/365.

Or, in the case of 98.9's previous format "The Big Talker" Now, How well did that do?
UT should have bought an AM counterpart, stuck news there, and operate under a daytime only license, but no they want to find a rock in a hard place.

It won't last 2 years before the station is back on the auction block, any wagers? When the economy capsizes so does the donations. Will see in November. If NPR is cut to the bone in 2013, they will be a fish without water.

KUT is already doing very well, and it's the talk programming that's getting the ratings, the donations and the underwriters. The music slots on KUT, however, perform decently. They're doing this deal to get the music off of KUT more than trying to expand the music!

Indeed, there's a LOT of difference between the programming of the former "big talker" and NPR. AM is dead and KUT knows it. If the talk programming is what's bringing in the donations, it only makes sense to put that on your primary signal, and relegate music to an admittedly inferior signal.

And as to KUT going 24/7 news, I don't think anyone believes this will be live and local 24/7. After all, if it was....it wouldn't be an NPR station! ;D

Anyone know why 98.9 is running Ad's telling people to advertise in the station when the station is being sold?

I also heard that announcement this morning. They mention the station would be changing formats
soon and the staff will be going hungry because they will be out of a job. In the meantime, the station needs all the help it can get so please advertise on the station the ad went on to say.

It isn't often that I am ashamed of the college I went to - but taking down an oldies station so they can take it over - well here is one alum that isn't going to give them money!
