Regional Mexican “La Mejor” Debuts In Houston

The linked article has an error: It is KTBZ HD-2 that is feeding K283CH. There is no HD-3 on 94.5.

I notice that La Mejor 104.5 now has some commercials, mostly for car dealerships. I also heard a KTBZ HD-2 legal ID near the top of the hour.

And it's off again! Lol.... Great debut. Anyway they're starting to add different genres of music, they're starting to be more like 106.5 Mas Variedad. I have hear Marco Antonio Solis, Mazz, Pedro Fernandez, Banda music, Mariachi, Tito El Bambino.

and the first Dish Network commercial too.

So the Bachata, Reggeaton format was just stunts to test the station? I really thought it was going to the format. I wonder if LA NUEVA 94.1 will turn into that format and have CESAR AGUSTO as a DJ there.

Details, details, Frog.

Lance would've had the scoop two weeks ago, had he checked out my thread on the subject of their testing of the translator, lol.

Even the best at what they do, make mistakes from time to time.

I've noticed several periods of silence during random checks of K283CH. One bit of silence lasted nearly 8 minutes. Are they losing the feed or what? Tonight, I've noticed the audio sounds a bit different from previous listens. Can you detect any difference, Señor Tejano? It's almost as if they've adjusted the equalizer settings, and didn't get it right. It still sounds full, but like certain ranges of the audio are being held back.

I sent them an Email about them losing sound and they replied saying they're having a little problems but they would be fixed by 2 pm. Which didn't really happen, and yes the sound is different sounds very low. Sounds like a cheap radio and I have to raise the volume.

Ok I didn't want to ask I was waiting for someone else to ask, but why in 104.5 a Translator for 94.5 HD2? Wouldn't it be cheaper for Hector Guevara to have the format on 91.1 HD2? And how will they know how well they're doing on ratings?

If the format was on the HD2 of 91.1, it could not be commercial. They could sell underwriting, but not real advertising.

My assumption is that Pastor Guevara has signed an LMA with iHeart to operate the station. In this case, the iHeart Nielsen subscription covers all the iHeart cluster stations, of which 94.5's HD-2 is one of the group. In that case, iHeart will get the numbers as part of their blanket deal.

The other possibility is that Pastor Guevara has rented the HD-2 of KTBZ from iHeart and is programming it himself. It means he likely will have to install studios, hire an airstaff staff, hire sellers and management, pay music licenses, contract with Nielsen and pay iHeart for the HD-2 usage. Very expensive... likely in the $25 k to $35 k a month range at minimum with no promotion and cut-rate salaries.

It makes more sense for iHeart to have a station they may think can fragment KLTN and some of the others a bit, and thus make their own stations look better in the rankers. And, at the same time, they might get enough revenue to make a little on the whole deal. iHeart might even have a deal in place to purchase the translator at some point.

Does anyone know who is renting from whom?

If Hector is leasing, those dollar figures would be no big deal for him. He has studios and office space and I am sure he could assemble a decent sales staff. Guevara has been in the market for well 15 years leasing stations. They have a knack for making their dollars work hard, so they tend to amaze folks with what they can do.

And again it's off the air, it's steaming but not playing.

They most likely have some technical bugs to work out.

That goes without saying. What's peculiar is that it was spot on, audio wise, when the translator first turned on. Now, as Señor Tejano correctly assessed, the audio is not the same. Still sounds wide and crisp, it just doesn't sound full anymore. Some audio levels are being held back for some odd reason. Not sure why the change was made, but they really need to reverse course.

The dollars may work hard, Bill, but there just aren't as many of them employed as there once were.

That is correct. Hector has taken it on the chin a couple of times but he always seems to rebound and do well. I haven't talked to Hector and Roberto in a couple of years. When we worked together he amazed me with how he did so much with so little while it generally didn't sound that way. To put it bluntly he jumped some hurdles I figured they couldn't clear but they always did.

A big thank you to the folks at iHeart media for the tour of their facilities this morning. The new studio for 104.5 (bottom pic) is located just to the left of 94.5 The Buzz.

Bet a hot shower to get the iHeart funk off was in order after you returned home, lol.

Is it just me, or does that 104-5 studio just reek of temporarily?

That is not a user-friendly Control Room.

Not at all. The wall warts on the outlet scream "we did this in less than a single afternoon".

If they are running Zetta, they don't have the monitors where the touch screen feature can be used. And it should be an "L" or "U" configuration, so it looks like they put together a few modules of studio furniture to make it run... that's way too much board for the format, too.

Does not look like there is a VoxPro for phoners, so that gives you an idea of what is likely an automated, voice tracked format. Just one CD player, too

Horrible mouse location, too.
