Regis Philbin Announces This Is His Last Year On TV

Announced on the Tue. 1/17/11 show that when the summer/fall 2011 comes around, he'll be leaving "Live With Regis & Kelly".
Final date to be announced.

Regis turns 80 on 8/25/2011.

Well there goes Kelly Rippa's career.

80 years old. God bless him! After the number of health problems Regis has had, it's time to retire and enjoy what's left of his life.

Then again, they're having the 5 radio hosts in next week to co-host with Kelly... :) ...and they have the 5 female radio co-hosts they had in back in August 2010. :) We'll see what happens.

The 5 male finalists:

http://www.dadt.com/live/contest/cohostsearch/11/index.html

* CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KHFI/AUSTIN's BOBBY BONES
* ENTERCOM Country KKWF/SEATTLE's FITZ
* NEWCAP RADIO Top 40 CIHT (HOT 89.9)/OTTAWA's JEFF MAULER
* BONNEVILLE Hot AC WTMX/CHICAGO's ERIC FERGUSON
* CBS RADIO Alternative KROQ/LOS ANGELES' "PSYCHO" MIKE CATHERWOOD

The 4 female finalists:

Date↓ Name↓ Station↓ City↓
August 17, 2010 Shannon Murphy WKQI Detroit, Michigan
August 18, 2010 Jayde Donovan WXXL Orlando, Florida
August 19, 2010 Kristin Cruz KOST Los Angeles, California
August 20, 2010 Jenn Hobby WWWQ Atlanta, Georgia

If the show would continue, Anderson Cooper would be a good replacement for Regis.

Except, of course, that Anderson is already launching his own syndie daytime talk show this coming Fall. Oops!

The folks down at 3001 Euclid (local ABC affiliate WEWS/5) must be stocking up on the Tums this morning. They are already faced with replacing Oprah in the fall ("Dr. Oz" will take the slot), and now this!

Anderson Cooper's show, even if it is available at 9 AM ET, wouldn't be an option for WEWS - I believe Raycom's WOIO/19-WUAB/43 have already picked it up.

Kind of expecting this from Regis. I wish him all the best in his retirement and possible future endeavors.

With that, I wonder if they could consider Kelly's husband Mark Consuelos since he has co-hosted Regis & Kelly before while Regis has been absent. I could also see Rich Fields stepping in too as he would make a good host.

Regis is one of the last of the true broadcasters. Broadcasting has killed its own farm system and the ladder Regis climbed has been taken away. Now notoriety trumps talent and experienced. ABC will probably drag out some stand-up comedian, or lawyer, or reality show contestant, or beauty contest winner, or failed actor as they've done before and then what Regis brought to the party will really be noticeable.

Bob Barker has gone. Larry King has gone. Letterman may be the last real broadcaster left.

The impact is greater in New York, where WABC is home to both the soon-to-be-departed Oprah... and now the soon-to-be-departed Regis.

I have every expectation that "Live with Jeff and Kelly" will continue for another season or two. Beyond that, the crystal ball is fuzzy. And yes, that's Jeff Gordon, NASCAR driver, and another regular fill-in for Regis.

Very true, but I can't drive to the WABC studios in a half hour. :D

I wasn't aware that she had one before replacing Kathy Lee Gifford as Regis' co-host.

Her bio states she was an actress, but I don't remember anything special she did.

Anyways with Regis departing, what is the chance that this program will continue with a new (male) host?

The McBrides (of Fort Myers Broadcasting-owned WINK TV) must be doing the same. They aired Oprah for many years. They only picked up Live! last season. Talk about a double-whammy! But knowing FMB they're reviewing their options as we speak.

I'm almost 60, but I recall Regis hosting local San Diego and LA talk shows when I was about 10 years old. According to Wikipedia, his first show was in San Diego in the early 60s. He labored for years doing local morning shows, then got his big break as Joey Bishop's sidekick on ABC late night. He's been on the air during six decades.

Kelly Ripa played on "All My Children" and also on the ABC sitcom
"Hope And Faith" with Faith Ford playing her sister (and they do
look like sisters).

Any bets on whether ABC will want the 9-10 AM slot for a third
hour of "Good Morning America"?

Don't say that, Llew! Say you're in your 50s. Not so much for the demographics, since
55+ is demographa non grata anyway, but so you don't remind the rest of us who are
also closing in on that "signpost up ahead, your next stop, the Old Folks Zone." ;)

What does this have to do with Regis Philbin retiring?

Moreover, what does this have to do with TELEVISION??

Cheers :D

Kelly Rippa was on All My Children before leaving Pine Valley to be Kathy Lee's permanent replacement.

Cheers :D

They won't get it because not every affiliate carries Live after GMA if they even carry it at all. Classic case in point is right here in Denver where KWGN 2 (CW) has the rights to Live while KMGH 7 (ABC) has Millionaire & Inside Edition.

If Live is ever cancelled, KWGN 2 would likely replace it with another syndicated program. No problem for them.

Cheers :D

I think all the ABC O&Os carry Live at 9 AM, except for one. And we all know why WLS-TV in Chicago doesn't. WLS-TV did run the show (when Kathie Lee was there) in overnights back in the early-to-mid '90s. Then at some point Disney moved the program over to WGN-TV, where it airs against Oprah at 9.

Perhaps if Mr. Philbin announced his retirement before Ms. Winfrey announced her departure, the cards may have been aligned for a third hour of Good Morning America with the all-important, soon-to-be-eight ABC O&Os on board in unison.
