Reminiscing about KABR Aberdeen & KWAT Watertown in the 50s & 60s.

Howdy Folks! I grew up near Aberdeen. My first radio job was at KABR, then at 1220AM, a single stick 250 watt daytimer located in Del's Drive Inn north on 281. That was in 1956. Anyone recall my fellow announcers? They were Jim Barnes, Jim Jackson and Jerry Zastrow. In the transmitter room was a Gates doing its job. But more interesting was a standby combination of Western Electric and US Army Signal Corp radio, which was the legacy of Del Hunt, the original owner who had since passed away. At one time the original KABR was quite a powerhouse carrying Mutual. It was in a classy art deco building, which last I saw was home to a cement company. That was a mile due east of the KABR I worked at. The board was a real, but operative, relic Western Electric with an undamped dB, not VU meter. :) More later if anybody is interested. I have many tales to tell about working there. :)

Then I worked at KWAT Watertown 950 in 1960. It was "The Voice of Variety," with quite an eclectic format with programming that would never fly today. Block programming like "Toast & Tunes" in the early morning, a noon hour of news, weather and sports and an hour of classical music at 2PM. I have more tales to tell here, too, if anyone is interested.

Off and on, I'm working on my radio days memories.

Anyone else have memories? :)

Anyone else have memories to share?
