Report: Actor Will Ferrell to portray John Madden in upcoming movie

Actor Will Ferrell to portray John Madden in upcoming movie, according to report

Will Ferrell is slated to star as John Madden in an upcoming movie about the Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster who also became famous for the football video game that bears his name, according to a Deadline report.
The movie, called "Madden," will be produced by Amazon and MGM studios and directed by David O'Russell, a five-time Academy Award nominee, Deadline reports.
This film is independent of another project about Madden's life that is reportedly in the works with Tom Brady as executive producer.

I was watching the "Magnificent Seven" recently. Outstanding actors like Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughan, Eli Wallach and more all in the same film. These guys were the best. Now today, we have hacks like Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler. No thanks .
Yeah, I know "Get off my lawn"...

...This is especially when John Madden would call KCBS Radio in San Francisco to do a segment about the NFL from time to time.
Not "from time to time." Madden used to have a regular AM Drive segment on KCBS. Initially it was once a week (either Mondays or Fridays, can't recall), then it became daily until his stroke made it impossible to continue. He would chat with the morning team, primarily Al Hart (until his own retirement), and later Stan Bunger. One of those interesting people who knew tons about his particular specialty, but could make it interesting and approachable to even casual listeners by virtue of his personality and sense of humor.

Remember that Magnificent Seven (1960) was filmed and released during a MUCH different era. The golden age of movie making for MGM, Warner Bros., Paramount, 20th Century Fox, etc. is long gone. Even as recently as the very early 1990s, "showbiz" was still alive and the same "stars" that you saw in many of the biggest movies and TV programs of the time would also be on Carson, game shows, celebrity roasts, Circus of the Stars, the Jerry Lewis Telethon, etc. that's all gone as well. Then again, remember that 1993 was 30 years ago already. While I don't consider the modern era of Netflix and Amazon offerings, or today's "stars" to be worse or better, I do recognize that it is a different era completely - both the people in the leading roles, and the way movies and popular media are distributed.

Yes. Back then the keyword was "better".

You're comparing apples to oranges, as none of those men are comedic actors, which Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler are. To accurately compare anything to Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler back to that time period, you'd have to compare them to the 1960s comedic actors. How do they compare to Jerry Lewis, Fred MacMurray, Jack Lemmon, Peter Sellers, etc.

I would say that Sandler and Ferrell are nowhere near as talented as Lemmon or Peter Sellers. Opinions always differ. Sandler was embarrassing in the LONGEST YARD remake. Burt Reynolds was far superior in the original. Some people will not watch movies that are over 25 years old. It's their loss...

Jerry Lewis was too much slapstick comedy. Will Ferrell has actually range in his acting.

It may be quite a while before it gets filmed, considering that writers are on strike, and directors, actors, and technical crewmembers may soon follow the writers to the picket line.
