Report: Cumulus To End LMA Of ESPN 103.3 Dallas

I know EMF is often mentioned when a facility is on the market, and I am sure they would like to bring K-Love to DFW (even with the trademark issues), but i don't believe that will happen with 103.3.

How about someone local? Are there any rich people in Dallas besides the Ewings?

What's wrong with Mark Cuban?

The presence of similarly formatted KLTY might be another reason for EMF to avoid launching a K-Love station in DFW. Similar situation in Houston, which has non-comm KSBJ. Both markets have Air1, though. EMF might be ready to expand its K-LOVE Classics format, but the branding conflict still comes into play in DFW.

I agree with other posters that the ESPN Radio national feed is just a placeholder pending a sale or new LMA.

I think K-Love Classics is more of hobby than anything. As for the other point, it seems like there was some effort on EMF's part in past years to not target markets that were already well served by a local CCM (particularly the non-com variety). That no longer seems to be a consideration as they have bought into markets big and small that already had a strong CCM facility. Think about their recent entries in DC competing with WGTS, in Nashville going up against Way FM, and Boise with KTSY, etc, etc. With KLTY being very commercial, i don't think it is a factor at all. DFW is probably even more appealing considering how successful KLTY has been for decades. Probably the strongest major market for the CCM format.

EMF is probably just waiting for the right facility (Cedar Hill) to come available at the right price to bring K-Love to North Texas.

One other thought with KESN is that it is on Salem's tower and with some leases there is a clause against competing with the owner's formats. Who knows if that is in place with that lease, but i am not sure there is another comparable tower KESN could move to.

The other issue with EMF doing K-Love in Dallas is that its trademark on the name specifically excludes Dallas and the surrounding areas. I can't imagine Entercom being as willing to work out a deal with EMF as Univision was in Los Angeles (I believe Univision also has the rights to the K-Love name in Houston).

I agree with Mediafrog and the others that Disney is almost certainly looking for another operator for 103.3 or a buyer. Although one would think Cumulus wouldn't have ended its agreement with Disney if it was interested in the property, I don't know that it can definitely be ruled out as a buyer either. Cumulus may not have wanted to run another sports station any longer and might be more interested in running 103.3 should it be allowed to do what it wishes with it. Then again, Cumulus hasn't exactly been in an acquisitive mood lately.

i can also see Disney getting a LMA deal with IHeartMedia to turn 103.3 in to the Black Information Network station in Dallas while retaining the Mavs radio broadcast rights.

Since Dallas is a PPM market, perhaps iHeart would accept a deal such as the one Univision did in LA to share the name. The meter does not care what the station is named or what it plays.

iHeart is at the current ownership cap of five FM stations so a purchase or LMA of 103.3 is not going to happen. Same for Entercom.

Assuming iHeart keeps investing in BIN nationwide, i would think it might eventually show up on 1190. Or maybe rent a translator like 97.5.

There are potential ways around that, like iHeart selling the BIN programming to 103.3 while not actually controlling or operating the station, but that seems highly unlikely. That programming's revenue is based on sponsorships, not ads. Unless iHeart agreed to pay high fees, 103.3 wouldn’t have the means to monetize it.

So, yeah, we can probably file that under “not gonna happen.”

maybe..but unlikley. iHeart probably does not want to interrupt the BIN for sports. Villanova moved from 610 AM to 97.5 in Philly now that 610 AM is a BIN station.

Again, barring a major rule change that can't happen. In a market the size of DFW, a group is limited to a total of eight radio stations and only five of them can be on the same band.

In DFW, iHeart owns 92.5, 97.1, 102.1, 102.9, and 106.1, plus 1190 AM. They can't buy or "lma" another FM, because that would put them over the cap of five.. They could lease another AM for BIN though.
