REPORT: Orioles To move to ESPN Radio 1300 AM and WHFS-FM

A weak signaled FMer at that. 105.7 is the weakest signaled Baltimore FMer.

At 50,000 watts and a 492 foot tower? After all, Baltimore is like class B1, or somewhere in that neighborhood, right?

Orioles' new flagship is WHFS-105.7

Also reported by DCRTV, which covers Baltimore as well as D.C. You have to scroll down as DCRTV is set up as a blog.

Why did the Orioles leave WBAL-1090? They got pi$$ed that WBAL ran Ravens promos during Oriole games even though WBAL is now the Ravens co-flagship.

105.7 in Baltimore is highly directional because of 105.7 in York PA -- only 40 miles or so north -- and 105.9 in Woodbridge VA/Washington DC. The Orioles are setting up a network in DC/MD/PA/VA.

For the record WJFK-1300 will do Orioles-related shows but not carry PxP.

This may very well actually hurt the Orioles as far as their radio network goes. A few years back WBAL automated the Orioles games. Now that the games are going to JFK/HFS, will the games still be automated? If they are not, expect some stations to drop out as far as being a part of the Orioles network goes.

I can't let 1090 and the Birds part ways without telling this story.

One of the most ironic promos I ever heard, I heard during the 1987-88 offseason. It hyped WBAL's reacquisition of Orioles PBP after 8 years on WFBR-1300 and one year on WCBM-680. The promo smacked of optimism after a losing 1986 season and a losing-er (a perfectly crumulent word) 1987 season that torpedoed 20 years of contending Oriole tradition. Sung, as best as the song spoofer could, to Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days", it went...

Bal-ti-more...stand up and cheer
Or-i-oles...it's gonna be a comeback year
Bal-ti-more...Or-i-oooooo-o-o-oles

After all that optimistic hype, when the bell rang for 1988, the Birds went off to an 0-21 start.

The Birds were on WFBR from 1979-87 and WCBM in 1988. WBAL got the Birds back in '89 because WCBM didn't pay a rights fee on time; that was the year WCBM went dark for several months.

I'm curious -- what does "automated" mean in the context of a sports broadcast? That the in-game ads and IDs are all automated?

Hadn't seen that term before in a sports play-by-play context.

You have access to 1988 Washington Post microfilms? Earlier this winter, I looked at some from that 0-21 start (visting a small college's library). They clearly indicate WBAL had the right to the O's in '88.

In light of the fact that there is at least one Class A in the market, I wouldn't say that. This station is kinda shoehorned between York (co-channel) and Woodbridge, Va. (first adjacent). Despite this, the station gets out almost to Wilmington, Del. to the northeast, and down into Prince George's County to the south. A shame to see the O's go off 'BAL, though, I enjoyed listening to games post sunset here in New Jersey, where they have a killer night signal.
