Retro: C-Band Satellite (OnSat Magazine), Wed. January 27th, 1994. Part 1 - Networks/CBC

Source: OnSat Magazine (one of a few satellite TV Guides, Satellite TV Week and Orbit were others). Some descriptions sourced from Eugene Register-Guard microfilm from the same day, Lincoln Journal-Star (on Newspapers.com) for NET, and a Canadian newspaper for the CBC listings. OnSat used a grid format that could fit dozens of channels on one page, so some programs don't have the full titles.

This listing will be divided into several posts or threads. First, the networks and superstations (including TBS). Then variety networks, premiums, pay-per-view and sports channels, and lastly, wild feeds. PT24 East was on F2, Denver 5 was on F1 (C1). KDVR was added later in '94.

Wow what a great effort! Although we didn't have C-Band, our local cable system used a C-Band feed to air CBC North. Since the channel was on Mountain Time, my assumption is that's CBC Northwest.

This was such a great find on eBay. They don't come up often. Same with Satellite TV Week.....

I got like 12 issues of OnSat on eBay recently. I'd buy what there is of Satellite TV Week but most are going for ridiculously high prices (one of which was apparently owned by OJ Simpson?????).

The CBC North 'east' feed was on Atlantic time I notice. I doubt there were many viewers out this way of that feed. What OnSat didn't mention was right before they signed off, CBC North had a scrolling screen of weather forecasts for the Arctic.
There were a bunch of ads in the OnSat Magazine for subscription packages from Turner Home Satellite, NPS, and others. You would purchase packages of 'services' (channels) for a certain price per month. There was another ad for the Primetime 24 service featuring drawings of a bunch of network stars. They claimed they were the "#1 choice among satellite dish owners". I'm sure that was true for the eastern/central owners, but the Denver stations filled in the west until PT24 West came on (KOMO/KPIX/KNBC).
Turner's biggest package had 30 'services' (and also included E/W feeds of a few channels) for $35 per month, $354.00/year. You could choose two premium packages from four that were available - HBO/HBO2/HBO3, Cinemax 1/2, Disney Channel E/W and/or Playboy. The package also had all the superstations, but Turner did not offer TNN, Nickelodeon, MTV, or VH1 in their packages.
Showtime Satellite Networks offered a package that contained Nick, VH1, and MTV, as well as an offer for two free PPV movies on TVN Satellite.
I notice that a couple of the package companies offered the 'choice' of either Primetime 24 East or the Denver stations for the networks.

The CBC North 'east' feed was on Atlantic time I notice. I doubt there were many viewers out this way of that feed. What OnSat didn't mention was right before they signed off, CBC North had a scrolling screen of weather forecasts for the Arctic.
In proof that everything's on the internet, check out this forecast from 1993--and note how brutally cold the temps are.

And in my VHS collecting adventures, I found a 1989 CBC North recording of 'Three Men on a Horse' (1936), with Frank McHugh, that had the sign-off included. Scrolling WX forecasts with ridiculously cold temperatures, into the O Canada video with the children's choir, and right to a green test pattern with no sign-off announcement. I guess the WX forecast was the 'announcement' for the default national feed.
A couple of years later I found two Christmas specials, Anne Murray and Carol Burnett, taped off CBC North that same year.

Have yet to find any VHS recordings from Foxnet, but there are scattered clips of commercial breaks on YouTube from that feed. They filled most of the breaks with direct-response advertising and promos, and not generic national ads.

I need to take some pictures of the magazine and get some of those ads pulled off.
